Louisiana International Piano Competition

225

It is time again for Alexandria to become a classical music Mecca.  The Louisiana International Piano Competition will start October 10th with its opening ceremony and end October 15th with what is sure to be an exciting final round with the Rapides Symphony.  Hearing a well played concerto is always exciting, but to get to hear three concertos in one night, played by world-class pianists, will be an absolute Louisiana International Piano Competitionmusical feast. Come witness the passion, experience the excitement, and let all your senses enjoy the music!

The Louisiana International Piano Competition (LIPC) was founded in 2004 by the visionary pianist, Dr. Nikita Fitenko.  With the assistance of his charming and talented wife, Katerina Zaitseva, Richard Gwartney and the enthusiastic participation of local board members, the LIPC first saw the light of day in 2005.  Coming just in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the competition nonetheless proved a rallying point for the citizens of Central Louisiana and a testimony to the resiliency of its population.

Since 2005, the Louisiana International Piano Competition has taken place in 2007, 2009 and now in 2011 with both an Artistic Level and Junior Level Competition.  Contestants stay with host families, who invariably become swept up in the excitement of the competition and become lifelong friends with the pianist they host.  The finals take place in association with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra under the inspired direction of Maestro Joshua Zona.  The performances by the three finalists have galvanized the crowds, which have been delighted with the virtuosity of the pianists.

Winners of the competition benefit from generous cash prizes, a recording contract and a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York and another with the St. Petersburg Symphony.  The finalists have also distinguished themselves in their subsequent concerts both here and abroad, as well as by their continued professional development.

We hope that everyone will join us from the Opening Ceremony on October 10th at 6:00pm at the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center to the final round of the Artist Level Competition on October 15th at 6:00pm.  Additional information may be obtained at www.lacompetition.com or www.lapianocompetitiontour.org.
