Ongoing – September: Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare Exhibits. Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare proudly presents our monthly art exhibits at area hospitals and clinics. Exhibits are currently showing: Photography of Susan Stevison at the Christus Cabrini Gallery for Reflection and Healing; Photographic Works of Sonny Monteleone at the Cabrini Cancer Center; Artwork by Sally Norem at the Rapides Regional Medical Center Gallery; and Genesis Photography by the Armbuster Family at the OSMS Gallery. September 10-11: Fall Frolic, Rapides Parish Coliseum Exhibition Hall, 10a.m.-5p.m. at., 11a.m.-4p.m. Sun. Sponsored by Red River Arts and Crafts Guild. Jewelry, wood crafts, purses, fresh canned food, ceramics, children’s clothing and more. $75 fee for crafter booth space and $125 fee for commercial booth space if booth doesn’t compete with crafters. September 16-17: Louisiana: A Quilter’s Paradise, Kees Park, 9a.m.-6p.m. Sponsored by Patience Quilters. September 10: Delta Music Festival 2011, Downtown Ferriday, 10a.m.-5p.m. Sponsored by LaTravel.com and Friends of the Delta Music Museum Foundation. All day music performances, food, arts, crafts vendors and an induction ceremony for the Delta Music Museum

October 10-15: Louisiana International Piano Competition, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center. The Louisiana International Piano Competition (LIPC) will be returning to Alexandria/Pineville, showcasing world class musical talent. There is opportunity to pre-purchase tickets for the week long events; as well as the semi-finals and the October 15 concert with the winner appearing with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra. This is Cenla’s

September 22-25: The new family musical “Willy Wonka”, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 7p.m. Thur.-Sat., 2:30p.m. Sun. Sponsored by Lagniappe Theatre Company. September 3: Breastfeeding Class, Christus Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital 1st Floor Conference Room, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The Breastfeeding Class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on the benefits, techniques and concerns of breastfeeding. September 8: ALS Support Group, Gallery Room, second floor RRMC Medical Terrace Building, 6 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. This monthly support group is designed for ALS patients, their family members, friends and caregivers. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month. Patients who attend will have access to companies which provide services for ALS patients, such as physical therapy or wheelchair repair. September 10: One Day Breastfeeding Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center, Medical Terrace, Gallery Room, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by lactation educator and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. September 12: The Morning Widowed Persons Support Group, Power Center, 10:00am-11:30am. This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. This month our focus: Picking Up The Pieces. There will be group sharing time and this group has trained Outreach Volunteers who are available to the newly grieving. September 12: Look Good, Feel Better, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, Noon. Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. Look Good … Feel Better is a free program led by a trained volunteer cosmetologist who teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active therapy. September 12: Diabetes Support & Activity Group, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital Conference Room, 6:00pm. This group will support all diabetics (Type 1 and Type 2) in Cenla. Topic this month is on Exercise and the importance of exercise and how it helps control blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, circulation, etc. Guest speaker will be Calleen Eyre, Program Manager at Louisiana Athletic Club in Pineville. September 12: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Power Center, 6:30pm-7:30pm. This is an on-going support group for parents, grandparents whose child has died. Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or

September 13: Sibling Class, Christus Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital Conference Room,6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. This class is a fun, interactive class designed specifically for young siblings who are expecting a new baby in the home. Cost: $10 per family. Call: 448-6970.

 

September 14: Diabetes Group Class, Rapides Women’s & Children’s Hospital Trellis Room, 9:00am – 12:00noon. This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. September 15: Parkinson’s Support Group, Power Center, 11:00am. This group meets on the third Thursday of each month and is open to anyone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their family/caregiver. September 17: Prepared Childbirth Class (One Day), RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am – 2:00pm. This class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. September 17: Childbirth Class, Christus Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital 1st Floor Conference Room, 9:30am – 4:00pm. This class is designed especially for expecting couples from early pregnancy through the delivery process. All classes are taught by certified childbirth educators. Cost: $30.

 

September 17: I’m A Gone Fishin’, Forts Randolph & Buhlow State Historic Sites, 10:00am – 3:00pm. During this program an instructor, dressed in period clothing, will demonstrate how a simple pole line is assembled and used. If weather permits, participants can follow the instructor to the banks of Pierson Lake to look for bait and test the rig. There will likely be a three legged pot full of hog lard heating up near a campfire, just in case we get lucky and catch a fish or two. Cost: $4.00. Call: (318) 484-2390.
