Protect the Eyes from Damaging Summer Sun

Protect the Eyes from Damaging Summer SunAs we get closer to summertime in the U.S., days are longer and exposure to sunlight and potentially harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays increases. Protecting eyes from these UV rays is essential for comfort and prevention of eye conditions associated with exposure to sunlight. Unprotected exposure to UV light from the sun can increase the risk of cataract development as well as damage to the retina. UV light is invisible and consists of 3 types of light – UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA and UVB are absorbed by the body and can damage the skin and eyes.

Wearing protective eyewear is best, along with hats that have a brim that blocks the sun. Some contact lenses have UV protection, but sunglasses over contacts are recommended for the area around the eyes and parts of the eye left unprotected. Look for quality sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB radiation. Gray colored sunglass lenses block out the light intensity without altering the color of objects. Lenses are also available that darken when exposed to UV light so that switching glasses is not necessary. The key is eyewear that blocks the UV and can be worn while being exposed.
