Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque causes the gums to become inflamed.  If you have bleeding with brushing and flossing, teeth that are drifting, increase in the size of spacing between teeth, bad breath, gingiva (gum tissue) becoming detached from teeth, changes in color of the gingival tissue or drainage around teeth, you need to seek professional help from your dentist immediately!

Studies have shown a link between periodontal disease and other systemic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.  If you have a systemic disease or you are currently taking medications you need to be meticulous about your oral care to help prevent these issues.  Remember prevention is key and only dental x-rays and exam will reveal the extent of the disease.  Please see your dentist every six months and get these issues diagnosed and treated properly.  Do not compromise your health and leave untreated.
