July 27: USO Celebration: Remembering the Big Band Era, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 3pm.  The Red River Jazz Band recaptures the memories and music from the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s when Big Bands were popular music entertainment and swing was the style.  Free admission is given to all servicemen and servicewomen attending in uniform. July 22-24: NSU Summer Dinner Theatre, A.A. Fredericks Auditorium at NSU.  The NSU Department of Performing and Creative Arts presents “Marriage Can Be Murder” a murder mystery dinner theatre where the characters also serve as your waitstaff.  It’s a fun-filled evening for all ages!  Advance reservations are required.  Cost: $25. July 8: ALS Support Group, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Building Gallery Room, 6:00pm – 7:30pm.  This monthly support group is designed for ALS patients, their family members, friends and caregivers. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month. Patients who attend will have access to companies which provide services for ALS patients, such as physical therapy or wheelchair repair. July 10: One Day Breastfeeding Class, Medical Terrace Gallery Room at RRMC, 9:00am – 3:00pm.  Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. July 12: The Morning Widowed Persons Support Group, Power Center, 10am-11:30am.  This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. July 12: Look Good, Feel Better, Trellis Room, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital, 12:00noon. Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. Look Good … Feel Better is a free program led by a trained volunteer cosmetologist who teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active therapy. July 13: Patience Quilters, West Side Regional Library, 6:30pm.  Patience Quilters meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at West Side Regional Library, located at 5416 Provine Place in Alexandria, off Highway 28 West. July 19-23: Summer Genealogy and History Camp, Alexandria Genealogical Library, 9:00am – 12:00noon.  This camp is open to boys and girls who have completed 6th grade to 15 years, and is limited to 15 campers.  Purpose of the Camp is to acquaint the participants with proper genealogical and historical research. Campers will fill out family group sheets for themselves, their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. Proper documentation of these sources will be discussed.  Campers will be given instruction on the use of computers in genealogical research and the role that the Internet plays.  Cost: $10. If you or someone you know has cancer, or you are a caretaker of someone with cancer, please join this group on the third Monday of each month. A light meal will be served. July 21: Safe Sitter Class, 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For boys and girls ages 11 to 13. Learn the basic skills you need to be a safe and successful babysitter. This medically-accurate, hands-on class teaches sitters how to entertain children and keep them safe, how to perform basic child care skills, how to call for emergency help, what to do when a child chokes, how to keep themselves safe and how to start a successful babysitting business.
