January 8: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering a free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease. January 23 – 26: 4th Annual Mardi Gras Cluster Dog Show, Alexandria Riverfront Center. The 4th Annual Mardi Gras Cluster Dog Show held jointly by the Baton Rouge Kennel Club and the Alexandria Kennel Club will welcome three new breeds this year that have been approved by the American Kennel Club. The Chinook (working group), Rat Terrier (terrier group), and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno (hound group). Last year, over 3,600 dogs were in attendance over the four days and this year promises to be just as big. The show will be held under the rules of the American Kennel Club and will be supervised by Jack Onofrio Dog Shows, Inc. 189 breeds of dogs will be represented this year each hoping to win the coveted “best in show” title.
