January 6: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Power Center, 6:30pm-7:30pm.  This is an on-going support group for parents, grandparents whose child has died.  Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent.  This group is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and meets on the first Monday of every month. January 7: Healing Hearts Perinatal Loss Support Group, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Trellis Room, 6 p.m.   The group helps parents who have lost babies. Call: 769-7569.

 

January 8: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering a free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. January 13: Look Good…Feel Better, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, Noon. Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. Look Good…Feel Better is a free program led by a trained volunteer cosmetologist who teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active therapy. January 23 – 26: 4th Annual Mardi Gras Cluster Dog Show, Alexandria Riverfront Center.  The 4th Annual Mardi Gras Cluster Dog Show held jointly by the Baton Rouge Kennel Club and the Alexandria Kennel Club will welcome three new breeds this year that have been approved by the American Kennel Club.  The Chinook (working group), Rat Terrier (terrier group), and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno (hound group).  Last year, over 3,600 dogs were in attendance over the four days and this year promises to be just as big. The show will be held under the rules of the American Kennel Club and will be supervised by Jack Onofrio Dog Shows, Inc.  189 breeds of dogs will be represented this year each hoping to win the coveted “best in show” title. January 25: Prepared Childbirth Class, Rapides Regional Medical Medical Center Terrace Gallery Room, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.  This one-day class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. January 26: Krewe of Cyllenius Mardi Gras Parade, Marksville, 2:00pm.  The Members of the Rotary Club of Avoyelles are pleased to announce the ninth annual Krewe of Cyllenius Mardi Gras Parade.  This event is being held to provide a source of family entertainment for all in Avoyelles Parish and Central Louisiana, and to showcase Avoyelles’ French heritage and some of the traditions associated with the “Cajun” Culture.
