Who’s In Charge?

“You’re not the boss applesauce,” is a favorite phrase at our house. It started when our kids were very young and it has sorta grown up with them.  It’s a great phrase to use when they are “testing the waters” and trying to spread their wings.  It also works great on adults that are being a bit bossy.  But if we look at this phrase from a literal standpoint, we realize it’s not really accurate.

There comes a point in our lives when we are the boss; when we have to own the decisions we make, and when we realize that our future and happiness depends on no one other than ourselves.  Hopefully along the way we learn that people are not put in our lives to make us happy or to make us feel fulfilled. They may help us learn more about ourselves, but the sooner we realize that our happiness does not lie in someone else, the sooner we will start to look within ourselves and find what it is that will lead us to happiness.  Everyone’s “happy” is different, and because it is different it is unrealistic to expect to find “the one” that makes us happy.  “The one” is within each one of us.  We know ourselves better than anyone else and to find our “happy” we need to look inside, and be honest with ourselves so we can discover what it is that gives us true happiness.  Life is short; live it, love it, make it happen—don’t waste time waiting for someone else to be in charge.
