The City Of Alexandria Plans Holiday Shopping Tour and Holiday Youth CampsThe City of Alexandria, through the Division of Community Services, is planning a variety of youth and adult special events for this holiday season.  The Thanksgiving break is fast approaching and the children will be home with nothing to do.  A great way to keep them occupied would be to sign them up for the City’s annual holiday camps.

The annual Thanksgiving Holiday Camp is open for youth ages 6- to 12-years-old, and will be held November 22nd and 23rd at the Alexandria Teen Activity Center from 8:00am – 12:00noon each day. Activities will include arts and crafts, games, guest presenters, sports and much more.

On December 27th and 28th, youth ages 9 and up can participate in the Winter Holiday Cooking Camp.  Held at the Bolton Avenue Community Center from 9:00am to 12:00pm, this camp will include baking, mixing and hands on cooking of a variety of recipes.  Both camps are free and open to youth in the area.  Pre-registration is required as space is limited.

Are you in desperate need of a road trip?  Well, check out our first annual Holiday Tour on December 9th!  The tour includes a day of shopping at the Louisiana Boardwalk in Shreveport followed by an evening stop in Natchitoches to view the famous Christmas lights display! The cost of the tour is $39.00 and seating is limited.  Registration forms are available in the Division of Community Services’ office located on the 2nd floor of City Hall.

The Division of Community Services continues to provide programming to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Alexandria.  There are some fun programs in the works for adults and seniors!  Bolton Avenue Community Center and the Frank O. Hunter Gym will soon be home to Lunch Cardio.  Lunch Cardio is a 45-minute workout held every Monday and Wednesday at 12:00noon.  If you need a boost of energy during your busy work day, this lunch time workout is for you.  If traditional workouts are not your forte, come and experience the fun of Nintendo Wii!  Wii Free Play will be available at the Alexandria Teen Activity Center on Wednesdays from 10:00am to 12:00noon!  Wii games include bowling, tennis, baseball, boxing and other virtual workouts that increase movement, body control and brain fitness!

Maybe you’re looking for a more relaxing activity. Check out the Noontime Pageturners Book Club.  This club, which is co-sponsored by the Rapides Parish Library, will meet twice a month for lively and interactive book discussions.  Also, if you just want to kick back and watch a movie, join us for Movie Matinee on Thursdays at 1:30pm for a new or classic movie free of charge!

Youth, grades K-12, can take advantage of the free After School Program which focuses on homework assistance, enrichment and recreational activities.  As an added bonus, students have access to a fully equipped computer lab.  Upon completing their homework, students may participate in recreational as well as art projects facilitated by the Alexandria Museum of Art.
