Summertime at the Alexandria Museum of ArtThe Alexandria Museum of Art starts out the summer celebrating LSUA’s 50 years with the first Annual Faculty and Friends Invitational exhibit which will hang in the 3rd floor galleries through July 4th.  This exhibit includes work from eleven artists that either worked with LSUA’s Art Department or as a staff member of AMoA. This year’s artists include: Ted Barnes, Judy Bynum-George, Roy de Ville, Leslie Elliott-Smith, Sara Fuhrer, Preston Gilchrist, Larry Leach, Catherine M. Pears, Anne Reid, Jeremy W. Simmons and Morris Taft Thomas. The artwork represents a range of styles and subject matter from figurative to landscape. In the first floor galleries, the Photographer’s Guild exhibit is also on display through July 4th. The Photographers Guild of Central Louisiana was organized in 1999 and consists of a group of like-minded craftsmen/artists intent on the purity of their craft/art.  The goal is to support, educate and strive to perfect artistic and technical skills. Those included in this exhibit are: Leslie Elliottsmith, Michael Elliott-Smith, Stephen Everett, Wilton Guillory, Peter Milder, Bill Morrison, Myron Wellan and Robert Willie. The works include color photography, black and white photography and photo montage.

Summer Art Camp starts this week and we are Going Green! The June one-week sessions run from May 31st – June 4th and  June 7th-11th. Birdie Rollins will be exploring watercolor with 6-9 year olds in the mornings from 9:00am to 12:00noon. Barry Owens will explore Collage and Assemblage art in the afternoons from 1:00pm to 4:00pm with kids 10 years old and up. Sessions 3 and 4 will be held July 19th – 23rd. Davi Scarbrock will teach both age groups about creating Found Object Art and from July 26th – 30th, Karen McPherson will explore wood designs with both age groups. We can’t wait to see the art the kids will create!

This summer, the Alexandria Museum of Art will participate in the Blue Star Museum program along with 600 museums in all 50 states offering free admission to active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day to show our appreciation for those who are serving this nation. If you are active duty military or an immediate family member, simply show either a Geneva Conventions CAC ID or a DD Form 1173 ID card at the desk for free admission.  This program is made possible through a partnership with Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts and more than 600 museums. We hope to see plenty of military families exploring our museum this summer!

Remember, when the temperature rises outside, it’s always 70 degrees inside the Alexandria Museum of Art where you can explore the world or art!
