Ongoing-December 31: Childhood Classics: 100 Years of Children’s Book Illustration, Alexandria Museum of Art.  This exhibition explores the history of children’s books from the turn of the century pen and ink Mother Goose art of Sarah Noble Ives, to the most popular works of today including the digital creations of Mo Willems. The exhibition features the original art of Dr. Seuss, the iconic Wild Things of Maurice Sendak and the perennial heroism of Garth Williams’ Stuart Little. Ongoing-December 31: 33rd September Competition.  The 33rd September Competition is an annual juried exhibition highlighting the work of contemporary artists in all media and styles created within the past two years. 50 artworks selected from over 450 international submissions are included in the exhibition and awards will be presented by juror Kristen Miller Zohn during the virtual opening. September 17: Zoom Sketchbook Share, 4:00pm. Every month, Ms. Cindy will provide sketchbook prompts and then we’ll all meet in a password protected Zoom room to share our sketches and we’ll get some tips to improve our drawings and take turns issuing new challenges to each other. August’s prompt is The Legendary 9-Tailed Fox and/or Rural Chinese Rice Paddies. You can do anything with those prompts that you want! Choose one or draw both. Maybe draw both together! October 1: Rapides Symphony Orchestra Virtual Symphony Sweepstakes.  The annual Symphony Sweepstakes will be the RSO’s first ever virtual fundraiser!  You can enjoy all the festivities from the comfort of your living room, including the reverse raffle for the $10,000 Grand Prize, a live auction, and entertainment from some of RSO’s very own musicians.  Only 250 tickets will be sold for a chance at the $10,000 grand prize. Ongoing-September: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

 

September 14-15: Save Cenla ASIST Training, 3659 Main Street in Hessmer, 8:00am-4:30pm.  Suicide is preventable. Anyone can make a difference. This two-day workshop in suicide prevention skills helps participants learn and practice a life-saving intervention model that is widely used by professionals and the general public. September 18: Hope for Cenla Virtual Summit, 10:00am-3:00pm.  Learn about substance use disorder, recovery, and overdose awareness through community members and leaders during this virtual summit. The summit will feature presentations by Dan Schneider, Camille Schreir, Claire Hetherwick, Ann Lowrey, Dr. Joe Kanter, Dr. David Holcombe, Dr. Murelle Harrison and more. The Director of the Rapides Parish Library, Celise Reech-Harper, and Community Outreach Specialist, Cheryl Dubois will moderate this event.

Ongoing-October: Gleaux for the Girls Virtual 5K.  Join the Breast Race in Cenla by registering as a Virtual Runner.  All registered runners will receive an official 2020 Gleaux for the Girls t-shirt in the mail. Run (or walk) your 5K from any location you choose during the month of October. Post your results on Facebook and tag “CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini” with #gleauxforthegirls to show your support and tell us who you are running for. September 12, 19, 26 & October 3: Saturday Morning Qi Gong, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10:30am. The Alexandria Museum of Art and Rapides Regional Medical Center have partnered to present Healthy Living @AMoA. Paul Nettles of The Levee Tai Chi School leads a class in Qi Gong, which is an ancient system of coordinated body postures and movements combined with deep breathing and meditation.
