Ongoing – September:  Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare Exhibits, Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare proudly presents our monthly art exhibits at area hospitals and clinics.  Exhibits currently showing:  the art of Courtney Chandler which will be featured in the Rapides Regional gallery located at Rapides Regional Medical Center between the South Tower Lobby and the ER; and the works of Keith Lacour in the Cabrini Hospital Gallery for Reflection and Healing located in the Outpatient Center (1st Floor). September 6: Member Preview Reception & Artists’ Talk, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:00pm-8:00pm.  The 27th Annual September Competition presented by the Alexandria Museum of Art is an annual juried exhibition selected from national and international submissions highlighting contemporary art practices in all media. September 12:  Mutability, a poetry reading by Jeannette Barnes LSUA, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:00pm-7:30pm.  Poet Jeannette Barnes will be reading from her new book, Change, reflecting on the theme of mutability. Multiple literary prize winner Jeannette Barnes lives in Pineville, Louisiana. Theatre

September 19-29: Shrek the Musical, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center.   Fun for the whole family, Lagniappe Theatre Company presents the popular Broadway musical Shrek featuring a cast of talented Cenla locals.  Performances will run nightly Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm with Sunday matinee performances beginning at 2:30pm.  Advance tickets are available online at www.lagniappetheatre.com. September 26-October 6:  The Dining Room, Hearn Stage, Kress Theatre, 7:30pm. Thursday-Saturday; 2:30pm. Sunday.  Sponsored by City Park Players.  The dining room of a home is the setting for a mosaic of interrelated scenes, some funny, touching and rueful which taken together create an in-depth portrait of societal changes.  From giggly teenagers to senile grandparents, the scenes tell a tale of life experiences in one room.  Cost:  $15 general admission; $12 seniors; $7 students.  Call City Park Players:  484-4478.

 

Events

September 7:  RRMC Breastfeeding Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am-3:00pm. Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this one-day class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. September 7: Cabrini Breastfeeding Class, Women’s & Children’s Hospital Conference Room,  9:00am – 1:00pm. The Breastfeeding Class is sponsored by Christus Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on the benefits, techniques and concerns of breastfeeding. September 9: Look Good…Feel Better, Noon. Cascade Room in Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. Look Good…Feel Better is a free program led by a trained volunteer cosmetologist who teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active therapy. In order to provide complimentary cosmetics, advance registration is required. Please identify what color makeup kit you will need: light, medium, dark or extra dark. September 9: The Morning Widowed Persons Support Group, Power Center, 10:00am-11:30am.  This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. There will be group sharing time and this group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving.  The Morning Widowed Support Group meets on the second Monday of each month and is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

September 9: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Power Center, 6:30-7:30pm.  This is an on-going support group for parents, grandparents whose child has died.  Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent.  This group is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and meets on the first Monday of every month; but changed for September due to the Labor Day holiday.   Pre-registration is encouraged. September 10: Sibling Class, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital Conference Room, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. This class is a fun, interactive class designed specifically for young siblings who are expecting a new baby in the home. Cost: $10 per family. Call: 866-581-3627.

 

September 11: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00pm. Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering a free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. September 21: Prepared Childbirth Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery, 9:00am-2:30pm.  This one-day class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. September 23: The Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The activity group will be offered for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The staff from Emeritus Senior Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

October 5: Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk, Alexandria Senior High, 9:00am.  The 2013 goal of Great Strides, the largest CF fundraiser, is to raise nearly $42 million through 600 national walks.  Funds raised through Great Strides have helped spur dramatic progress in the lives of those who have cystic fibrosis.
