September 3-4: Cane River Zydeco Festival, Downtown Riverbank.  The Magnolia -State Peace Officer’s Association will host the 11th annual Cane River Zydeco Festival in downtown Natchitoches.  Festivities on Friday include a Zydeco Dance Contest and entertainment by D.J. “LA” Jones.  Events on Saturday begin with a Poker Run through Natchitoches Parish, followed by evening entertainment by D.C. & The Zydeco Country Boyz and Leon Chavis & Zydeco Flames.  Cost: $7.00 (Saturday only).  Call: 800-259-1714.

 September 4: Breastfeeding Class, 1st Floor Conference Room at Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  This class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on the benefits, techniques and concerns of breastfeeding.  September 4: Goldonna Drake Salt Works Festival, downtown Goldonna.  Visit northeast Natchitoches Parish for a day of heritage and fun in Goldonna, Louisiana.  Activities include arts and crafts booths, food, a parade and live entertainment.  There will be a children’s area that will include a dunking booth, face painting, a jupiter jump and cake walk.  An ATV ride from Winnfield back to Goldonna will follow the parade.  September 6: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Power Center, 6:30pm-7:30pm.  This is an on-going support group for parents and grandparents whose child has died. Educational handouts and pamphlets are available, and each month we will focus on a different topic.  This month our focus will be: How the Non-Bereaved Can Help.  Please bring a picture of your child to share with the group.  This group has trained Outreach Volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent.  Come at 6:00pm and share fellowship and a brown bag supper.  September 8: Cenla Coalition to Prevent Homelessness Membership Meeting, Emmanuel Baptist Church, 11:00am.  The Coalition is getting ready to embark on a Strategic Planning process and we need your input! We all know that services for the homeless in this community are limited and funds to help this population are difficult to come by. With your help, we can identify gaps in services and develop a plan that can truly end homelessness in our community through discussion of current programs and services that are available to assist the homeless as well as services that are needed but are currently unavailable.  September 9: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Auditorium, 9:00am – 12:00noon.  Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering a free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse.  September 9: ALS Support Group, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Building Gallery Room, 6:00pm – 7:30pm.  This monthly support group is designed for ALS patients, their family members, friends and caregivers. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month. Patients who attend will have access to companies which provide services for ALS patients, such as physical therapy or wheelchair repair.  September 11: Market at the Museum, Alexandria Museum of Art, 9:00am – 2:00pm.  Come On Down(town!) for the “Second Saturday Market at the Museum” on Saturday, Sept.11 from 9am-2pm.  Our new monthly event features original art booths, food vendors, farmer’s produce and specialty food products, live music, art activity for children, and more.  Come shop, have fun, and visit the museum exhibits.  September 11: One Day Breastfeeding Class, Medical Terrace Gallery Room at RRMC, 9:00am – 3:00pm.  Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience.  September 11: 2nd Annual Christus Cabrini Baby Fair and Family Expo, Alexandria Riverfront Center, 9:00am – 3:00pm.  Vendors will display baby and family health care products, education, community entertainment, and so much more! There will educational speakers discussing SIDS and child safety, infant CPR, childhood obesity and preparing yourself for pregnancy.  For entertainment, a ‘Dance Showcase’ is planned that will feature local dancers from throughout Central Louisiana that will be performing.  September 13: Look Good, Feel Better, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 12:00noon. Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. Look Good … Feel Better is a free program led by a trained volunteer cosmetologist who teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active therapy.  September 14: Patience Quilters, West Side Regional Library, 6:30pm.  Patience Quilters meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at West Side Regional Library, located at 5416 Provine Place in Alexandria, off Highway 28 West.  September 17-18: Slagle Trade Days, Slagle Center on Hwy. 8.  The event will feature gospel music, arts & crafts vendors, and games for the kids. September 18: Childbirth Class, 1st floor Conference Room at Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital, 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.   This class is designed especially for expecting couples from early pregnancy through the delivery process. September 21: Happiest Baby on the Block, 1st floor Conference Room at Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital, 6:00p.m. – 8:00p.m.  This program was created by Dr. Harvey Karp and is designed to teach parents simple, effective and fun techniques to quickly soothe their babies’ cries and help them to sleep a little longer. September 25: Kids Bike Race, First United Methodist Church in Pineville, 9:00am – 12:00noon.  Pelican State Credit Union and St. Frances Cabrini are hosting a Free Kids Bike Race. The event is completely free and open to the public. Kids ages 12 and under can enjoy bike races, face painting, space walks and more. Each participant will receive a medal of completion and a chance to win a new bike! Bippo the Hippo from Kid’s Dental Zone and Petey the Pelican will be on site.  September 25: Cherokee Elementary Fall Fun Festival, Cherokee Elementary School, 10:00am – 4:00pm.  This year’s festival will include an inflatable slide, jumper, obstacle course along with karate, dance and cheer demonstrations and live Bingo.  Participants will also be able to participate in karaoke singing, a cakewalk, face painting, temporary tattoos, take a train ride and try their hand at the dunking booth.  It’s fun for the whole family!  Concessions and refreshments will be available for sale.  Call: 442-1987.

September 25: 3rd Annual Avoyelles Bayou BBQ Cookoff, Plaucheville.  The one-day cook-off and arts & crafts festival will benefit a group of athletes from The Avoyelles Society of the Developmentally Disabled (ASDD) who wish to attend The Special Olympics Louisiana games. Another recipient of this year’s funds will be The Avoyelles Animal Welfare Society (AAWS).  The festival will have vendors selling great food, and fun for children of all ages. September 27: Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Power Center, 11:00am. This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia.  September 27: Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Power Center, 11:00am. The staff from Kingsley Place will offer appropriate activities for those with Alzheimer’s disease with a fun, hands-on approach.
