September 3-4: Cane River Zydeco Festival, Downtown Riverbank. The Magnolia -State Peace Officer’s Association will host the 11th annual Cane River Zydeco Festival in downtown Natchitoches. Festivities on Friday include a Zydeco Dance Contest and entertainment by D.J. “LA” Jones. September 4: Goldonna Drake Salt Works Festival, downtown Goldonna. Visit northeast Natchitoches Parish for a day of heritage and fun in Goldonna, Louisiana. Activities include arts and crafts booths, food, a parade and live entertainment. There will be a children’s area that will include a dunking booth, face painting, a jupiter jump and cake walk. September 6: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Power Center, 6:30pm-7:30pm. This is an on-going support group for parents and grandparents whose child has died. Educational handouts and pamphlets are available, and each month we will focus on a different topic. This month our focus will be: How the Non-Bereaved Can Help. Please bring a picture of your child to share with the group. This group has trained Outreach Volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent. September 8: Cenla Coalition to Prevent Homelessness Membership Meeting, Emmanuel Baptist Church, 11:00am. The Coalition is getting ready to embark on a Strategic Planning process and we need your input! We all know that services for the homeless in this community are limited and funds to help this population are difficult to come by. With your help, we can identify gaps in services and develop a plan that can truly end homelessness in our community through discussion of current programs and services that are available to assist the homeless as well as services that are needed but are currently unavailable. September 9: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Auditorium, 9:00am – 12:00noon. Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering a free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease. September 9: ALS Support Group, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Building Gallery Room, 6:00pm – 7:30pm. This monthly support group is designed for ALS patients, their family members, friends and caregivers. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month. September 25: 3rd Annual Avoyelles Bayou BBQ Cookoff, Plaucheville. The one-day cook-off and arts & crafts festival will benefit a group of athletes from The Avoyelles Society of the Developmentally Disabled (ASDD) who wish to attend The Special Olympics Louisiana games.
