Riding the River with AMoAThe Alexandria Museum of Art springs into action this month with An Evening on the River, Thursday, April 7th from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. We had so much fun on the bayou in January that we are taking it to the river this month! This fundraiser features dinner and wine by Dean Kennedy of Spirits Catering and acoustic blues by Toby Traylor coming in from Lea’s Lunchroom. The highlight of the evening will be a dynamic and entertaining gallery talk by Brent Funderburk, Professor of Fine Arts at Mississippi State University and scholar on the life and work of beloved Mississippi coast artist, Walter Inglis Anderson (on exhibit through April 30th). The cost is $75.00 per ticket. Come on down and enjoy Rolland Golden’s “River and Reverie” exhibit also on exhibit through the end of the month.

Riding the River with AMoASpeaking of river related events, if you haven’t heard about the Louisiana Dragon Boat Race that will be taking place on May 14th on the Red River, visit AMoA’s website at www.themuseum.org to check it out. April 8th is the deadline to sign up your team to paddle the Red and support the museum while engaging in a fun and exciting community event. It’s going to be a spectacular day on the river with our Second Saturday Market moving up to the amphitheater for the day of revelry!

This month’s Second Saturday Market at the Museum is Saturday, Apr 9th from 9:00am to 1:00pm and, as always, is free and open to the public. This is always a wonderful opportunity to find unique art and specialty foods in a fun atmosphere at AMoA. Take advantage of the city’s trolley buses that will be running between the Museum Market, Kent House Herb Day and the Tom Peyton festival at First Methodist. AMoA’s musical guests that day will be the Family Playhouse cast members performing songs from musical “Evangeline” which opens the night of Artwalk on Friday, April 15th.

The story of Evangeline continues at AMoA with “George Rodrigue: Saga of the Acadians” opening that Friday, Apr 15th during Downtown ArtWalk which is free and open to the public.  Come see the exhibit that night and pick up a coupon for $5.00 off your ticket to “Evangeline” the same night, or attend any performance of the musical and pick up a coupon for free entrance to see the exhibit anytime before it closes. The exhibit consists of 15 oil paintings by Louisiana icon George Rodrigue, and illustrates the hardships the Acadians encountered in order to preserve their identity following their exile from Canada to Louisiana.

At Museum Afterhours on Thursday, April 21st from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, enjoy original works by various musical guests in a relaxed coffeehouse atmosphere at AMoA’s Acoustic Concert Series with host, John Wakefield. Visit our website for current information at www.themuseum.org. AMoA Members always get in free for Afterhours events with general museum admission for all others.

Riding the River with AMoAAn AMoA closes out the month with Gigi Love in Concert on Friday, April 29th at 7:00pm. This Texas-born Singer/Songwriter will be stopping at the museum between her Texas tour and the Jazz Fest! Gigi Love juggles blues and rock with folk and country honky-tonk and has recently played with Kenney Chesney.  If you missed Gigi when she opened for the Dave Matthews Band at the Columbia River Gorge, or played for the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Closing Ceremonies, don’t fret.  You can catch her at the Alexandria Museum of Art! For ticket info, contact the Museum at (318) 443-3458.

Yoga in the Gallery continues on Tuesdays and Fridays and Catered Lunches resume inside the Clementine Café at Alexandria Museum of Art. The Truck was fun for the month of March but we’re bringing in back inside in April, every Wednesday from 11:00am to 1:30pm. See you at the Museum!
