October 13: Honoring a Lifetime of Music: The Sam Bailey Gospel Show, Delta Music Museum, 6:00pm.  Sam Bailey has devoted much of his life to performing and presenting music and to this day he is a crowd favorite when it comes to singing gospel songs. He is well loved by the Miss-Lou community, his church and his music fans. A lifelong musician, he has been a member of many bands over the years and on many radio shows.  In the 1970s, Mr. Sam started turning more toward gospel music and now has a monthly show at the Delta Music Museum’s Arcade Theater in Ferriday.  Bailey will be honored by Louisisana Folklife Ambassadors Tommy Ike Hailey and Linda J. Gardner as part of the Ronnie Cox and Friends Show at the Arcade Theater.

October 16: Literature & Love, First United Methodist Church Alexandria, 7:30pm.  The poetry of William Shakespeare set to music by Emma Lou Diemer and the poetry of Robert Frost set to music by Randall Thompson will be centerpieces of this concert.  Tickets are available at www.redriverchorale.com or www.ticket-central.org. October 11-21: I Hate Hamlet, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre. City Park Players presents Paul Rudnick’s comedy set in John Barrymore’s old apartment in New York City. The play follows a successful television actor as he struggles with taking on the dream role of Hamlet, dealing with a girlfriend who is keeping a firm grip on her chastity, and playing host to the ghost of John Barrymore, who has come back to earth for the sole purpose of convincing Rally to play the part. October 26: Sweet Revenge Murder Mystery Dinner, Southern Forest Heritage Museum, 7:00pm.  Join the Southern Forest Heritage Museum for another fall tradition. Ongoing-October: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

October 9: Making It Work, RRMC Gallery Room, 6:00pm-8:00pm.  A breastfeeding class for working moms, this class is designed to support working mothers who want to continue breastfeeding and need to know how to fit it into their daily schedule. October 10: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00pm.  This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore, no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. October 10: Child Safety Seat Check, RRMC Medical Terrace driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm. A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat. October 12-13: Aircraft Fly-In, Pineville Airport at Lake Buhlow.  Friday evening features a supper at 6:00pm followed by the Red River Jazz Band providing live music on the deck.  On Saturday, “all you care to eat” breakfast is served starting at 7:30am.  Attendees on Saturday can view planes, flying and chat with pilots.  Hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 614.  Everyone is welcome.  Cost: $6.00 (suggested donation).

October 13: The Great 106 Roll Out, Southern Forest Heritage Museum, 11:00am. What started as a cosmetic restoration of the Red River and Gulf Engine 106 soon uncovered that he engine was unstable and sinking into the ground with a noticeable tilt to the left. Thus, the 106 must be rolled out of its cozy home in the Car Knockers shed for repairs to be made to the track. The 106 is being readied to roll out for the first time in some 60+ years. October 13: The Horse Soldiers, Oakland Plantation, 6:45pm.  Cane River Creole National Historical Park will host a screening of the John Ford movie “The Horse Soldiers” at Oakland Plantation as part of the 64th Annual Fall Tour of Homes.  Filmed at and around Oakland the movie, starring John Wayne, William Holden and Constance Towers, The Horse Soldiers included many members of the community who appear as extras. October 24: Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, Hearn Stage, 7:00pm.  This film is part of the 2018–2019 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. During 1979’s Sandinista Revolution, a group of Nicaraguan women shatter barriers to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reforms. ¡Las Sandinistas! tells the disappearing story of the women who fought in Nicaragua’s Sandinista Revolution and their continuing struggle for justice. October 27: Celebrating Traditional Filé Maker and Oral Historian John Oswald Colson, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum, 2:00pm.  John Oswald Colson has been making filé for over sixty years. Starting in the early summer months, the leaves of sassafras trees are gathered, although traditionally leaves were harvested only on the 8th of August. The leaves are laid out evenly to dry and then de-stemmed by hand. Mr. Colson uses a traditional Native American pilon, similar to a large wooden mortar and pestle, to pound the dried leaves into a fine powder commonly known as filé. He has demonstrated his skills at many festivals and shared his knowledge in many projects. Colson will be honored by Louisiana Folklife Ambassador Shane Rasmussen, who will interview him about his life and work as a traditional filé maker and oral historian of the Cane River region.

October 27: Historic Rapides Cemetery Tour, 201 Hattie Street in Pineville, 3:00pm-5:00pm.  Historic Rapides Cemetery Preservation Society presents guided walking tours of the historic cemetery which will begin every 15 minutes and feature actors in period costumes presenting the stories of five new characters from among those buried at the cemetery.  The day will also feature a special exhibit on mourning in the 1800s, presented by Kent Plantation House. Alexandria Museum of Art and Rapides Regional Medical Center have partnered to present Healthy Living @AMoA. Originating in ancient China roughly four thousand years ago, Qi Gong or Qigong (pronounced Chee Gong, literally “Life Energy Cultivation”) is an ancient system of coordinated body postures and movements combined with deep breathing and meditation. October 26: Play It Forward Tennis Tournament, Alexandria Tennis Complex, 3:30pm.  Ritchie Real Estate presents this tennis tournament fundraiser where all proceeds generated will be given to the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.
