October 6: Luminary Costumes Workshop, Alexandria Museum of Art. Join us at AMoA to create your own illuminated costume. Choose from three construction styles ranging from easy to difficult. Participants may bring interesting clothing to transform with paint and lights (easy), create a plastic couture article of clothing (moderate) or Bauhaus inspired costume (more difficult). October 13: Honoring a Lifetime of Music: The Sam Bailey Gospel Show, Delta Music Museum, 6:00pm.  Sam Bailey has devoted much of his life to performing and presenting music and to this day he is a crowd favorite when it comes to singing gospel songs. He is well loved by the Miss-Lou community, his church and his music fans. A lifelong musician, he has been a member of many bands over the years and on many radio shows.  In the 1970s, Mr. Sam started turning more toward gospel music and now has a monthly show at the Delta Music Museum’s Arcade Theater in Ferriday.  Bailey will be honored by Louisisana Folklife Ambassadors Tommy Ike Hailey and Linda J. Gardner as part of the Ronnie Cox and Friends Show at the Arcade Theater.

 

October 16: Literature & Love, First United Methodist Church Alexandria, 7:30pm.  The poetry of William Shakespeare set to music by Emma Lou Diemer and the poetry of Robert Frost set to music by Randall Thompson will be centerpieces of this concert.  Tickets are available at www.redriverchorale.com or www.ticket-central.org. October 11-21: I Hate Hamlet, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre. City Park Players presents Paul Rudnick’s comedy set in John Barrymore’s old apartment in New York City. The play follows a successful television actor as he struggles with taking on the dream role of Hamlet, dealing with a girlfriend who is keeping a firm grip on her chastity, and playing host to the ghost of John Barrymore, who has come back to earth for the sole purpose of convincing Rally to play the part. October 18-28: Mamma Mia!, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center. Mamma Mia! the Musical features 22 of ABBA’s hit songs. The story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs create the perfect atmosphere for this enchanting story of love, laughter and friendship. A live band joins the action onstage and propels excitement and energy directly into the audience. This show is absolutely electric! October 26: Sweet Revenge Murder Mystery Dinner, Southern Forest Heritage Museum, 7:00pm.  Join the Southern Forest Heritage Museum for another fall tradition. The mystery dinner theatre, presented by the “Unusual Suspects” employs both filmed and live acting.  A catered gumbo dinner by Simply Southern Catering will be included.  All proceeds go to the maintenance and operation of the museum. Ongoing-October: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

 

Ongoing-October: balance Meetings. balance – A group of people working on individual goals with emphasis on substance and alcohol abuse prevention meets each Monday and Thursday at 5:30pm and Wednesday at 12:00pm.  Meetings take place each Monday and Wednesday at the CLASS Office, located at 1785 Jackson Street in Alexandria.  Thursday meetings are held at the King Branch library, 1115 Broadway Avenue.  Call: 318-442-1010.

 

October 6: Fall Herb Day, Kent Plantation House, 8:00am-1:00pm.  This much anticipated bi-annual community event includes tables laid out with a wide variety of fall herbs and vendors peppered throughout the grounds selling an abundance of hand crafted artisan items. October 6: Cenla Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Alexandria Amphitheatre, 9:00am. The event will feature vendors with tables for information on Alzheimer’s and hot dogs after the walk. Registration opens at 9:00am; the walk begins at 10:00am. Participants can walk alone or form teams, with those raising $100 or more receiving an official walk t-shirt. October 6:  Breastfeeding Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am-3:00pm.  Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this one-day class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. October 6: Funktoberfest, Spirits Food & Friends, 3:00pm. Ready to get Funky? This non-profit festival showcases craft beer samples from professional micro-breweries, a home brewers competition with sampling and incredible live music. October 7: First Saturday Breakfast, Pineville Airport at Lake Buhlow, 7:00am-10:00am.  Breakfast is cooked up every month as a nonprofit event by the Experimental Aircraft Association for pilots flying-in, and everyone interested in aviation.  A spread of hearty vittles—all you want to eat and drink—will give you energy to kick off the day’s events.  Consider a trip to enjoy the venue of aircraft clubhouse, deck and lake along with airplane chatter and visiting. October 8: Good Mourning Widowed Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11:00am-12:00pm. This is an ongoing support group for men and women whose spouse has died.  There will be group sharing time and this group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to those who are newly grieving.  The Mourning Widowed Support Group meets on the second Monday of each month and is sponsored by CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Check our Face Book page: CHRISTUS Widowed and Widowers. October 9: Making It Work, RRMC Gallery Room, 6:00pm-8:00pm.  A breastfeeding class for working moms, this class is designed to support working mothers who want to continue breastfeeding and need to know how to fit it into their daily schedule. The class will focus on management of milk supply and offer strategies to sustain pumping.  Other topics include types of pumps, storage and handling of milk and strategies to prevent problems. October 10: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00pm.  This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore, no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. October 10: Child Safety Seat Check, RRMC Medical Terrace driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm. A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat. The car seat check process takes between 15-25 minutes, depending on how many car seats are in the vehicle. Cost: Free.

 

October 10-14: 58th Rapides Parish Fair, Highway 71 South just past LSUA.  The Rapides Parish Fair returns featuring 4-H and FFA Livestock Competitions, Spirits Spectacular Competition, Queen’s Pageant, Arts & Crafts, Barnyard Nursery, Food Vendors, Live Music, the Mighty Thomas Carnival and much more! October 11: Les Fest, Alexandria Zoo, 6:30pm-10:00pm. It’s an unforgettable night at Central Louisiana’s wildest outdoor venue! Enjoy live music and a fantastic menu featuring savory and sweet options available for purchase from local restaurants and caterers. Les Fest celebrates Alexandria Zoo and former zoo director Leslie “Les” Whitt, who dedicated his life to serving the citizens of Alexandria and promoting the conservation of the world’s wildlife. October 11: LSMSA Informational Meeting, Granberry Conference Center at LC, 7:00pm.  The public is invited to join a Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) representative who be available to answer questions and present information about the school. Eight, ninth and tenth graders and their families are encouraged to attend and learn more about the school’s unique academic opportunities and exciting student life at one of the nation’s Top 1% schools. October 12-13: Aircraft Fly-In, Pineville Airport at Lake Buhlow.  Friday evening features a supper at 6:00pm followed by the Red River Jazz Band providing live music on the deck.  On Saturday, “all you care to eat” breakfast is served starting at 7:30am.  Attendees on Saturday can view planes, flying and chat with pilots.  Hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 614.  Everyone is welcome.  Cost: $6.00 (suggested donation).

 

October 13: The Great 106 Roll Out, Southern Forest Heritage Museum, 11:00am. What started as a cosmetic restoration of the Red River and Gulf Engine 106 soon uncovered that he engine was unstable and sinking into the ground with a noticeable tilt to the left. Thus, the 106 must be rolled out of its cozy home in the Car Knockers shed for repairs to be made to the track. The 106 is being readied to roll out for the first time in some 60+ years. October 13: The Horse Soldiers, Oakland Plantation, 6:45pm.  Cane River Creole National Historical Park will host a screening of the John Ford movie “The Horse Soldiers” at Oakland Plantation as part of the 64th Annual Fall Tour of Homes.  Filmed at and around Oakland the movie, starring John Wayne, William Holden and Constance Towers, The Horse Soldiers included many members of the community who appear as extras. October 20: Reptile Day, Kent Plantation House, 9:00am-1:00pm.  National Reptile Awareness Day is Sunday October 21st,so we decided to get a head start! Reptiles are a vital part of a healthy environment, with common snakes helping to keep down bugs and rodents that would love to make a nest in your home. Reptile Awareness Day is an excellent opportunity to educate yourself on the wonders of the scaly world, and perhaps learn an appreciation for them. Help us get a jump start. Cost: $1.00. October 20: Fullerton Sawmill Day, Fullerton Lake Recreation Complex, 9:00am-2:00pm.  Join in the fun for all ages in this event sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service—Calcasieu Ranger District & the Fullerton Reunion Association.  The day will feature barnyard animals, candle making and woodsman skills demonstrations, spinning, quilting, historical exhibits, pony rides, crafts, games, concessions, guided tours and live music.  Cost: Free. October 20: Prepared Childbirth Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am-2:30pm. This one-day class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. October 22: Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Cabrini Mediplex, 11:00am-12:30pm. The staff from Brookdale Assisted Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided. October 22: Sibling Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:30pm-8:00pm. This class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. October 24: Canines in Costumes, Compton Park in Alexandria, 5:15pm. Canines in Costumes, sponsored by Montgomery Animal Hospital, will feature a costume contest for dogs and lots of fun for the whole family. Registration for costume contest will be from 5:15pm-5:45pm. Judging will begin at 6:00pm. All proceeds will go to Boudreaux’s Animal Rescue Krewe (BARK). October 24: Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, Hearn Stage, 7:00pm.  This film is part of the 2018–2019 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. During 1979’s Sandinista Revolution, a group of Nicaraguan women shatter barriers to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reforms. ¡Las Sandinistas! tells the disappearing story of the women who fought in Nicaragua’s Sandinista Revolution and their continuing struggle for justice. October 27: Celebrating Traditional Filé Maker and Oral Historian John Oswald Colson, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum, 2:00pm.  John Oswald Colson has been making filé for over sixty years. Starting in the early summer months, the leaves of sassafras trees are gathered, although traditionally leaves were harvested only on the 8th of August. The leaves are laid out evenly to dry and then de-stemmed by hand. Mr. Colson uses a traditional Native American pilon, similar to a large wooden mortar and pestle, to pound the dried leaves into a fine powder commonly known as filé. He has demonstrated his skills at many festivals and shared his knowledge in many projects. Colson will be honored by Louisiana Folklife Ambassador Shane Rasmussen, who will interview him about his life and work as a traditional filé maker and oral historian of the Cane River region.

 

October 27: Historic Rapides Cemetery Tour, 201 Hattie Street in Pineville, 3:00pm-5:00pm.  Historic Rapides Cemetery Preservation Society presents guided walking tours of the historic cemetery which will begin every 15 minutes and feature actors in period costumes presenting the stories of five new characters from among those buried at the cemetery.  The day will also feature a special exhibit on mourning in the 1800s, presented by Kent Plantation House. October 27: Van Gogh Gala, River Oaks Square Arts Center, 7:00pm.  If you love to don festive costumes, attend live art auctions, and immerse yourself in the culture of a community, River Oaks’ signature fundraiser event is for you! October 31: Pumpkin Carving Contest, Rapides Regional Medical Center, 10:00am-2:00pm. Rapides Regional employees will display their creativity during the hospital’s annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Come out and see the winning, and not-so-winning, displays. The pumpkins will be on display in the hallway across from The Gift Shop in the main hospital.

November 3: 2018 Business Expo & Car Show, Alexandria Mall, 10:00am-2:00pm.  This year, the Chamber is combining the Expo with a Car Show to increase the exposure for participating businesses like yours! Vendor booths are available on a first come, first serve basis. The Expo & Car Show are free and open to the public. The Expo will be inside the Mall near Bed Bath & Beyond. The Car Show, featuring classic cars, will be in the adjacent space in the Mall parking lot with live music and a festive vibe. The combined Business Expo & Car Show will draw hundreds of people, providing an opportunity to highlight new products, merchandise, services and technologies offered by your business. November 5: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 6:00pm-7:00pm. This is an on-going support group for parents and grandparents whose child has died. Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent. This group is sponsored by CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and meets on the first Monday of every month. Pre-registration is required. October 6, 13, 20, 27 & November 3: Saturday Morning Qi Gong, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10:30am. Alexandria Museum of Art and Rapides Regional Medical Center have partnered to present Healthy Living @AMoA. Originating in ancient China roughly four thousand years ago, Qi Gong or Qigong (pronounced Chee Gong, literally “Life Energy Cultivation”) is an ancient system of coordinated body postures and movements combined with deep breathing and meditation. It is a powerful tool used to stimulate good health, spirituality, and a state of calm mindfulness. Cost: Free. Call: 318-443-3458.

 

October 7: LSUA Generals Ring Ceremony and Auction, The Fort at LSUA, 4:00pm.  The event’s guest speaker will be Peabody Head Coach and current Cenla-ian of the Year, Charles Smith.  The event will include an auction featuring items such as an autographed basketball signed by the players and coaches and a round of golf with a player and a coach. Admission includes hors d’oeuvers, punch, cake and a commemorative gift.  Proceeds from the ceremony will be used to defray travel expenses, etc. for the men’s basketball team. Cost: $25.00.

October 13: Geaux Pink 5K Pink Dress Run, Walker Toyota, 4:30pm.  The purpose of this event is to bring Breast Cancer awareness and education to Central Louisiana while also raising funds to expand and enhance the local treatment capabilities, rehabilitation programs, education services, support services and community outreach offered as a part of the CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Center. October 26: Play It Forward Tennis Tournament, Alexandria Tennis Complex, 3:30pm.  Ritchie Real Estate presents this tennis tournament fundraiser where all proceeds generated will be given to the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.
