Ongoing-October 31: Paint Pink,  Arts & Healthcare Inc., Cabrini Hospital Gallery, (Cabrini outpatient building, 1st floor across from Radiology) and the Rapides Gallery (South Tower between the ER and the Lobby) for the entire month of October.  All art is for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to continue arts programs in our local cancer centers. Ongoing–November 21: Jerry and Pat Carr: Our Fragile Home, Alexandria Museum of Art.  This exhibition by Pat Musick and Jerry Carr portrays the feelings of fragility described by astronauts as they looked down on earth from space.  It is an exhortation to care for our environment, to nurture and sustain our fragile home.  The eight sculptural elements are made up of both fragile and strong elements in order to represent the balance between the strength and fragility of our world.  Our Fragile Home was organized by Pat Musick and Jerry Carr of Camus Incorporated. October 14-15: BAS Relief Painting Workshop, River Oaks Art Square, 1330 Second Street. 10:00am-4:00pm. Using acrylic gesso to draw images in relief, students will use different painting and glazes technique to create a completed piece of art. Cost: $40 per person. October 16: Fall ArtWalk 2015, Alexandria Downtown Cultural Arts District, 4:00pm -9:00pm. Sponsored by Arts Council of Central Louisiana. October 24: AMoA Adult Art Class, Alexandria Museum of Art, 1:00pm-4:00pm.  “Earth without Art is Eh with Nancy Noles” focuses on the aesthetics of nature and the role of organic patterns around us, participants will create wall sculptures or assemblage pieces using organic and fibrous materials. October 15: New Frontiers-Abendmusik Alexandria, The Hearn Stage at the Kress Theatre, 6:00pm. Consisting of saxophonist Paul Forsyth and oboist Leah Forsyth, the Three Reeds Duo presents music specially written for their rare combination.  Our program includes music by Natchitoches composer Richard Rose as well as the brand new Three Reeds Suite by Shreveport composer Tom Hundemer. October 17: Shades of Praise, St. James Episcopal Church, 5:00pm.  The Saint James Episcopal Church Concert Series opens the 2015-2016 season with a Fall Festival and outdoor concert.  The concert will feature Shades Of Praise Interracial Gospel Choir from New Orleans. October 22: The Hunts in Concert, Louisiana College, 7:30pm.  With a harmony-laced take on folk-pop that’s both breathtaking and sweetly ethereal, The Hunts are a Virginia-based band made up of seven brothers and sisters who’ve been playing music together almost their entire lives.  Ranging from ages 17 to 25, the seven brothers and sisters collaborate to create a sophisticated sound that blends a fresh sensibility and elements of Americana and indie-inspired folk. November 7: Rebel State Historic Site Dulcimer Day, 1260 Highway 1221 in Marthaville, 9:00am.  The day’s event will feature workshops for First Time/Beginners, Mountain and Hammered, and Christmas Music Ensemble as well as a Dulcimer contest and open jam session. A limited number of Mountain Dulcimers will be available for loan during the workshops. October 5: End The Stigma, Downtown Alexandria. End the stigma of mental illness. Area businesses in the downtown area along with Volunteers of America will chalk the talk. October 9: Fit for the Cure, Alexandria Dillards, 10:00am-8:00pm. Research shows that 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong sized bra. Wearing a bra should not be even slightly uncomfortable.  Women should be professionally fitted for a bra once a year to ensure their bra size has not changed as a result of natural fluctuations in their body. Participate in a Fit for the Cure event and receive a complimentary bra fitting from a Wacoal fit specialist. For every woman that participates, Wacoal will donate $20.00 to Susan G. October 10: Light for Life Event, Marksville Courthouse, 4:00pm. The Avoyelles Community & Youth Coalition is putting on a Suicide Awareness Event called “Light for Life”. It will start at 4:00pm with an Awareness Walk starting at the Courthouse with entertainment and music to follow. We’ll have booths set up from several agencies in the area for information and resources throughout the evening. We will close the evening with a Candlelight Vigil starting around 6:30pm.

 

October 12: The Good Mourning Widowed Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11:00am.  This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. There will be group sharing time and this group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving.  The Morning Widowed Support Group meets on the second Monday of each month and is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 318-448-6938.

October 14: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00noon.  This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. October 14: Child Safety Seat Check, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm. A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat. The car seat check process takes 15 to 25 minutes, depending on how many car seats are in the vehicle. The seat checks normally are held the second Wednesday of each month. Cost: Free.

 

October 15: Parkinson’s Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11:00am-12:30pm.  This group meets on the third Thursday of each month and is open to anyone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their family/caregiver.  We offer educational handouts and programs plus a chance to share with others. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. October 20: Girl Talk, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:00pm-8:00pm. Rapides Regional Medical Center offers this two-hour class designed for girls between the ages of 9 and 13–and their mothers. If mothers can’t attend, aunts and grandmothers are welcome. The class will explain some of the physical and emotional changes that occur to adolescents during puberty. October 26: The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11:00am – 12:30pm.  This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia. October 26: Natchitoches Regional Medical Center Annual Fall Scramble, Alexandria Golf & Country Club, 11:00am-5:00pm.  The Natchitoches Regional Medical Center Foundation and C. D. Morgan & Associates invites the general public to enjoy a relaxing day of golf at their Annual Fall Scramble.  Featured contests include Closest to Hole, Longest Drive, and more.  Prizes, refreshments, live entertainment will conclude this very special event.  Proceeds go to fund nursing scholarships and community wellness grants.
