Ongoing – October: Paint Pink Art Exhibits.  During the month of October, Arts & Healthcare, Inc., in conjunction with Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and Rapides Regional Medical Center, is proud to present their annual Paint Pink Art Exhibit commemorating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the Cabrini Gallery for  Reflection and Healing (located in the Cabrini Outpatient Center on the first floor across from Radiology) and the Rapides Art Gallery (located at Rapides Regional Medical Center in the South Tower between the ER and the South Tower Lobby). The exhibits feature a variety of art by local artists, and proceeds from sales benefit arts programs in our local cancer centers.  Cost: Free. Call: (318) 769-7602.

October 9:  James Michalopoulos:  Rapt in Color Art Lecture, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6-7:30p.m.  Come hear this renowned New Orleans based artist speak on his inspirations and artistic practice and view his works currently on exhibition at AMoA.  He released his second book in 2003, published by Cattywompus Press. He has studios and galleries in Burgundy, France and New Orleans, U.S.A. October 8: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-noon.  This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. October 27: The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia. We offer educational handouts, sharing time, and lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  The Alzheimer Support Group meets on the fourth Monday of each month.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

October 27: The Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  The activity group will be offered for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The staff from Emeritus Senior Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

October 31:  Mall-O-Ween, Alexandria Mall, time:  TBA.  Sponsored by Spirit Halloween at Alexandria Mall.  Costumes, treats and candy galore!  Participating mall stores while supplies last.  Free treats for 12 and under.  Cost:  Admission free.  Call:  448-0227.

 

November 1: Special Needs Through the Life Span Conference, Christus Cabrini Pediatric Therapy Center.  The Central Louisiana Down Syndrome Association and Louisiana Autism Society will be hosting a one day informational conference for families and professionals who are affected by or work with individuals with special needs. November 1: Thrift or Treat, Alexandria Flea Market, 2:00pm-4:00pm.  Alexandria Flea Market vendors will the 2nd Thrift or Treat event, which will be a chance for children to dress in their costumes to collect treats from vendors in a completely safe environment.  Cost: Free.  Call: (318) 441-9900.

 

November 1:  LSUA Foundation Gala, location:  TBA, 6:30p.m.  Sponsored by LSUA Foundation.  The 5th Annual LSUA Foundation Gala is a black tie/formal affair and will be an evening of big band music featuring the Jimmy Maxwell Orchestra from New Orleans, full bar and dinner included!  We are raising money for LSUA.  Reservations required.  Cost:  $100 per person; sponsored tables are available.  Call Melinda F. November 7:  24th Annual All Souls Memorial Service, Historic Cemetery on the grounds of Central Louisiana State Hospital, 10a.m.  Refreshments at the Rose Cottage following the service.  Refreshments provided by Compassionate Care Hospice of Alexandria and C.L.S.H. October 2-30: Yoga Classes, Cabrini Mediplex Yoga Room, 4:00pm – 5:15pm.  Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.  These classes are on-going and meet every Monday and Thursday.  This class is sponsored by Christus St Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Watkins: 448-6938.

October 7 – December 30(Tuesdays):  Yoga in the Gallery, Alexandria Museum of Art, 5:30-6:30p.m.  Yoga is offered free of charge every Tuesday at AMoA.  Yoga instructor, b. Hedrick is an ascetic Taoist yogi with fourteen years of yoga practice.  Yoga Tao is for all experience levels, incorporating spirit-mind-body techniques.  Cost:  Admission free.  Call Jenny Gallent:  443-3458.

 

October 7, 14, 21, 28 & November 3: Run GDN, Spirits Food & Friends, 6:30pm.  Every Tuesday—rain or shine—meet on the patio at Spirits Food and Friends located at 1200 Texas Avenue.  Go for a run and rejoin for food and drinks.  It can be whatever you want it to be!
