November 2:  Glass Fusing with Doug Stannard, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10a.m.-Noon.  Create your own glass art by stacking or layering thin sheets of glass in different colors to create patterns or simple images in this glass fusing workshop led by glass artist Doug Stannard.  Participants will each design and form a glass lightcatcher and a jewelry piece during the class, which will then be fired in a kiln for participants to pick up later.  Explore the glass sculptures and use of light in the current exhibition, “Stephen Knapp:  New Light” as inspiration for your art.  Cost:  $20 AMoA members; $30 non-members.  Call Anne Reid:  443-3458.

November 7-10:  Tuna Christmas, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 7p.m. Thurs.-Sat.; 2:30p.m. Sun.  Sponsored by Lagniappe Theatre Company.  Bill Bush and Ross Schexnayder return to Tuna, and this time, it is 24 hours before Christmas and the delightfully eccentric characters are attempting to cope with seasonal traumas such as a disaster prone little theatre production of a Christmas Carol, and a yard decorating contest being sabotaged by a mystery phantom.  Cost:  $16 general admission; $13 seniors; $11 children under 12 and/or groups of 10+.  Call Ross/Karen Schexnayder:  48-STAGE.

October 5:  RRMC Breastfeeding Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am-3:00pm. Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this one-day class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. October 9: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00pm. Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering a free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. October 28: The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia. We offer educational handouts, sharing time, and lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  The Alzheimer Support Group meets on the fourth Monday of each month.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

October 28: The Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The activity group will be offered for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The staff from Emeritus Senior Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

October 28: Sibling Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. This class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. October 31: RRMC Pumpkin Carving Contest, Rapides Regional Medical Center, 10:00am-3:00pm. Rapides Regional employees will display their creativity during the hospital’s annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Come out and see the winning, and not-so-winning, displays. The pumpkins will be on display in the hallway across from The Gift Shop in the main hospital.

 

October 31:  Mall-O-Ween, Alexandria Mall, 5-7p.m.  Sponsored by the Alexandria Mall.  Come in costume to enjoy a family-friendly movie and kids can stock up on candy and treats from participating mall retailers.  Cost:  Admission free.  Call Missy McKnight:  448-0227.

November 1:  LSUA Foundation Gala, Alexander Fulton Grand Ballroom, 6:30p.m.  Sponsored by LSUA Foundation.  This 4th annual event raises money for the scholarship program for deserving students at LSUA.  The black tie affair will include dinner, cocktails and the big band sounds of Bulletproof Brass Band from Dallas, TX.  Cost:  $100 per person or sponsor tables available.  Call Melinda F. November 9:  Sugar Day Festival, Kent Plantation House, 9a.m.-5p.m.  Come see how sugar was made in the early 1800s and watch various period demonstrations and craftsmen.  Free tours of the house and outbuildings all day as well as free entertainment.  Food and beverages for sale and many local arts and crafts vendors will be displaying their works from around the region.  Cost:  Admission free.  Call:  487-5998.

 

November 9:  Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Muscle Walk, Run and Ride, Louisiana Athletic Club, Pineville, 7:30a.m.  Join us for the first MDA Muscle Walk, Run and Ride.  5K Fun Run, the traditional non-competitive MDA Muscle Walk and a Poker Run hosted by the Red Horse Foundation.  Decide how you want to get involved and then sign up!  The common thread is raising money for MDA.  Call Christina Griffin:  388-3221.

October 5: Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk, Alexandria Senior High, 9:00am.  The 2013 goal of Great Strides, the largest CF fundraiser, is to raise nearly $42 million through 600 national walks.  Funds raised through Great Strides have helped spur dramatic progress in the lives of those who have cystic fibrosis.
