October 22: Patricia & Juan Ruiz-Healy Collection of Contemporary Oaxacan Art, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:00pm – 8:00pm.  The Alexandria Museum of Art and the Mexican Consulate in New Orleans will co-sponsor a special reception to celebrate the Patricia & Juan Ruiz-Healy Collection of Contemporary Oaxacan Art.  The event will feature a gallery talk at 7pm by art historian and collector, Patricia Ruiz-Healy of San Antonio,TX and Mexico, Mexican music, and catering by Mi Tierra Cocina Mexicana of Forest Hill, LA. October 13 – 16: Chicago The Musical, A.A. Fredericks Auditorium, 7:00pm.  The Northwestern State University Department of Theatre and Dance presents the sights, sounds and all that jazz of the world-famous Kander and Ebb musical set in Prohibition-era Chicago.  Based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on, 6-time Tony award winning Chicago is the six-longest running musical in Broadway history.  Appropriate for ages 13+.  Cost: $15 adults; $12 seniors, NSU Students admitted Free with valid student ID.  Call: 318-357-4483.

October 22: Murder at Area 51, Southern Forest Heritage Museum, 7:00pm.  Professor Ed Woods is the guest speaker at the annual membership drive for the Longpine chapter of We Are Not Alone (W.E.N.A.) He has information that will blow the lid off of the governments Cover Up of Aliens and Alien Abductions. But aliens and the government are the least of his troubles now. His wife Claudia doesn’t want to be here and his girlfriend wants to help her leave…permanently. Join us and a night of Laughs, Conspiracy Theories and Murder when the Unusual Suspects present “Murder at Area 51”.  Costumes are optional but encouraged. November 3 – 6 & 10 – 16: The Lion In Winter, Northwestern State University Theatre West, 7:30pm.  James Goldman’s historical play depicts the interpersonal relationships among members of the English royal family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day of the year 1183.  The play explores themes of dysfunctional family, political maneuvering, war and peace, as well as aging, death, inheritance, and posterity. As the principle characters plot, scheme, conspire, and counter-plot between each other, the deep seated emotional ties between them get played out in the political arena, such that sibling rivalry and marital jealousy translate into civil war, treason, and perhaps even murder among the members of a royal nuclear family.  Appropriate for ages 13+. October 9: Experimental Aircraft Association Fall Fly-In and Aircraft Display, Pineville Municipal Airport, 8:00am – 4:00pm.  The public is invited to our Annual Fall Fly-In Event to watch aircraft take off and land, talk to pilots and see many different types of personal aircraft on display, including modern and classic airplanes along with home-built aircraft and seaplanes.  Cost: Free.  Call Richard Hare: (318) 487-9716.

October 9: One Day Breastfeeding Class, Medical Terrace Gallery Room at RRMC, 9:00am – 3:00pm.  Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. October 14: Diabetes Group Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace, 9:00am – Noon.  This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. October 14: ALS Support Group, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Building Gallery Room, 6:00pm – 7:30pm.  This monthly support group is designed for ALS patients, their family members, friends and caregivers. October 16: Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure,” Alexandria Riverfront Center, 7 a.m.-10:30 a.m.. Join Rapides Regional Medical Center employees as they participate in Alexandria’s first Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure.” This fundraiser benefits breast cancer research, education, treatment and support for breast cancer patients and their families. October 18: Cancer Support Group, Rapides Cancer Center, Noon. If you or someone you know has cancer, or you are a caretaker of someone with cancer, please join this group on the third Monday of each month. Sanat Sanghani, M.D., Rapides Cancer Center’s radiation oncologist will provide a demonstration of image-guided radiation treatment using a pumpkin and a coffee bean.  A light meal will be served. October 18:  Sibling Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. This class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. October 22:  Southern Circuit of Independent Filmmakers:  Mississippi Damned, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 7p.m. Sponsored by Arts Council of Central Louisiana.  Based on a true story, three poor black kids in rural Mississippi reap the consequences of their family’s cycle of abuse, addiction and violence.  They independently struggle to escape their circumstances and must decide whether to confront what’s plagued their family for generations or succumb to the same crippling fate.  Cost:  $5.  Call Elizabeth:  443-4718.

October 23:  2nd Annual Zombie Walk of Alexandria, Downtown Alexandria, 6:30p.m.  Sponsored by Zombie Walk of Alexandria.  Gather at Tamp and Grind, dress as a zombie and help us in our attempt at the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of zombies.  TREE House Museum will host zombie friendly crafts and a portion of the t-shirt sale proceeds will benefit the Arts Council of Central Louisiana.  Cost:  Admission free.  Call Duana Trotter:  308-1950.

October 26: Josiah Chambers and Oakland Plaantation: 1825-1960, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:30pm.  Dr. Patsy Barber will serve as the featured speaker for this event as a part of the 50 year celebration of LSUA.  The Oakland Plantaion site is the current home of LSUA. October 31: Halloween Trick-or-Treat 2010, 5:00pm – 8:00pm.  The City of Alexandria has designated its official “Trick or Treat” times for 2010.  Motorists are advised to use extra caution on the roadways during these times.  Always remember to only trick or treat at the homes of people you know, walk in well-lit sidewalk areas, never allow children to trick or treat alone and never allow children to consume unwrapped, open or suspicious candy.  Have a save and happy Halloween!
