Arts

Ongoing – June: Arts & Helathcare Art Exhibits.  The works of Barry Owen will be featured in the Gallery for Reflection and Healing in St. Francis Cabrini Hospital, located on the first floor of the Outpatient Center; the photography of Charles Ward will be on display in the Rapides Regional Gallery between the South Tower Lobby and ER; and the traveling Lilly Oncology Art Exhibit will be on display at the Cabrini Cancer Center for the first two weeks of June.  Many of the works on display are available for purchase.  Cost: Free.  Call: 318-769-7602.

 

June 6 – August 23:  Dorothea Lange’s America, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10a.m.-5p.m. Tue.-Fri., 10a.m.-4p.m. Sat. June 6 – August 23:  Through the Eyes of Sarah Albritton, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10a.m.-5p.m. Tue.-Fri., 10a.m.-4p.m. Sat.  Ruston artist Sarah Albritton paints reconstructed emotional memories using both real and imagined elements situated in a bird’s eye view of north Louisiana rural landscape, confronting the past with blunt reality.  Growing up as and African American in north Louisiana during the 1930s and 1940s she has expressed her experiences through various creative pursuits.  Member Preview Reception:  Friday, June 6, 6-8p.m.  Cost:  $4 adults, $3 seniors and students, $2 youth 4-13 and under 4 free.  Call AMoA:  443-3458.

June 20: The Multi-Dimensional Muse: A Photography and Ceramic Sculpture Exhibition Opening, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:00pm-8:00pm.  The Muse combines ceramic sculpture and photography for this celebration of Muse Art. Music

June 14: 2014 Rebel State Historic Site Harmonica Contest, Rebel State Historic Site, 7:00pm.  Contestants can compete in two divisions: Professional and Amateur. The Professional division will feature previous winners of the annual contest, while all other contestants will compete in the Amateur division.  There are five categories, each weighing 20 points each, that contestants will be judged by:  (1) timing/meter, (2) technique (method/skill), (3) difficulty of music, (4) stage presence and (5) expression of music (harmony, clarity and tone).  Cost: $4.00 (adults 13 to 61); all others & annual pass members Free.  Call: (888) 677-3600 or (318) 472-6255.

June 7:  Breastfeeding Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this one-day class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. June 18: Safe Sitter Class, RRMC Education Department, 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Boys and girls, ages 11 to 13, can learn the basic skills needed to be a safe and successful babysitter. June 21: Prepared Childbirth Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center Terrace Gallery Room, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.  This one-day class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. June 23 – 27:  Jane in June Camp, Kent Plantation House, 9a.m.-3:30p.m.  Camp for young ladies ages 8-12 emphasizes the role a young lady played in the early 1800s.  With crafts such as sewing, painting, gardening and more, your child will learn there was much a lady was responsible for in this time.  Daily tea parties with lessons in table setting, serving and etiquette will be held every afternoon.  Lunch is a formal affair where she will learn proper table conversation and more.  Cost:  $200 per camper.  Call Kent Plantation House Office:  487-5998.

 

June 23-27: Showstoppers Summer Drama Camp, Lagniappe Theatre, 9:00am-1:00pm & 2:00pm-6:00pm.  Offering two sessions of incredible dance training from Broadway Choreographer Linda Leonard. Your child’s skills will improve by leaps and bounds after this week of wonderful song and dance. Ending with a performance in the new Lagniappe Theatre Second Stage in the Alexandria Mall. June 23: The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Note the new location across the street from the hospital at 3351 Masonic Drive. This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia. June 23: The Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Note the new location across the street from the hospital at 3351 Masonic Drive.  The activity group will be offered for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The staff from Emeritus Senior Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

June 23: Sibling Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m.  This class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. July 4-5: Red, White and Blue Festival, Clinton American Legion Hall, 8:00am.  A two-day event of fun and family festivities in East Feliciana Parish.  Besides the above events, other activities include an Classic/antique car/truck show, Golf Cart Parade, Karaoke Singing Contest, 5-K Run-Walk, Kids games and amusements and lots of food vendors.

 

July 4: Avoyelles Arts and Music Fest, 109 Tunica Drive East in Marksville, 11:00am – 8:00pm.  Louisiana’s July 4th Destination Festival will feature live music, food, BBQ Cook-Off, arts & crafts and fun for all ages!  4th of July Parade rolls at 6:00pm.  Cost: Free. Call: (318) 264-9392.

June 7: Kisatchie National Forest Young Fishing Derbies.  Children need to bring a fishing pole and a desire to catch some fish. Prizes will be given to all participants.  Age requirements vary from district to district. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
