Ongoing – June: Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare Exhibits.  Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare proudly presents our monthly art exhibits at area hospitals and clinics.  Exhibits currently showing: The Lily Oncology Travelling Exhibit will be featured in the Cabrini Cancer Center; Courtney Chandler will be featured in the Christus Cabrini Gallery for Reflection and Healing located in the Outpatient Center (1st Floor); Charles Ward of Alexandria will be featured in the Rapides Regional Gallery located between the South Tower Lobby and ER.  For more information on the exhibits, visit www.artsandhealthcare.org; or Call: 769-7602.

 

Ongoing – August 24:  Pulp Icons: Stewart Nachmias, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10a.m.-5p.m. Tues.-Fri., 10a.m.-4p.m. Sat.  Cast paper and prints created from deeply carved wood blocks, inked directly to act as molds for hand-dyed paper pulp result in low-relief prints. Amusement parks and circuses depicted in rich color embedded in its dimensional surface highlight excitement and danger of urban life with a sense of humor!  Cost:  $4 adults; $3 Seniors/students/military; free for LSUA Students and children 4 and younger.  Call Alyssa Fridgen:  443-3458.

 

Ongoing – August 24:  Pulp Icons: Stewart Nachmias, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10a.m.-5p.m. Tues.-Fri., 10a.m.-4p.m. Sat.  A group exhibition of contemporary Native artists explores created spaces transcending time and place. The illusion of a singular identity is unraveled through contemporary reworkings of weaving, performance, beadwork, storytelling, mythology, and symbolism, infusing both historical and contemporary processes and references. June 10, 11, 15: Silk Banner Painting, 10:00am-2:00pm.  Arts & Healthcare invites the community to join us in painting thre silk banners.  Come enjoy music and refreshments and be a part of the healing properties of creating art.  No experience necessary. June 10-14: AMoA Summer Art Camp Stop Motion Animation, Alexandria Museum of Art.  Instructor Cindy Cooper Blair will help campers become movie makers and learn the magic of animation, using puppets, drawings and other objects to create fun stop motion animation short films.  There are two session daily: 9:00-12:00pm (ages 6-9), 1:00-4:00pm (ages 10+). June 15: Art in the Community: Recycled Art Sculpture, Alexandria Museum of Art, 1:00pm-3:00pm.  Create art using recycled and found materials from our community. June 10: The Morning Widowed Persons Support Group, Power Center, 10:00am-11:30am.  This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. There will be group sharing time and this group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving.  The Morning Widowed Support Group meets on the second Monday of each month and is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

June 10, 17, 24: Slips, Trips & Falls, 10:45 a.m. Rapides Senior Citizens Centers have partnered with Rapides Regional Medical Center to provide tips on how to prevent slips, trips and falls during National Safety Month. June 19: Safe Sitter Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center Education Department, 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For boys and girls ages 11 to 13. Learn the basic skills you need to be a safe and successful babysitter. This medically-accurate, hands-on class teaches sitters how to entertain children and keep them safe, how to perform basic child care skills, how to call for emergency help, what to do when a child chokes, how to keep themselves safe and how to start a successful babysitting business.  Class size is limited. June 20: Parkinson’s Support Group, Power Center, 11:00am-12:30pm.  This group meets on the third Thursday of each month and is open to anyone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their family/caregiver.  We offer educational handouts and programs plus a chance to share with others. June 22: Prepared Childbirth Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.  This one-day class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. June 24: The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia. June 24: The Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The activity group will be offered for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The staff from Emeritus Senior Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 448-6938.

 

June 24: Sibling Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. This free class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. June 25-28:  Superhero Science Camp, T.R.E.E. House Children’s Museum, 9a.m.-Noon.  The camp will be all about superheroes and science.  Each day we will focus on a different superhero and a science topic that the superhero is associated with.  We will discuss Batman and the biology of bats, Spiderman and insects/arachnids, Ironman and robotics and the Incredible Hulk and chemical reactions.  Cost:  $10 deposit, $60 members, $70 non-members.  Call T.R.E.E. June 27:  MDA’s Cenla Executive Lock-Up, Texas Roadhouse, 11a.m.-2p.m.  Sponsored by Muscular Dystrophy Association.  Local community leaders are nominated and will be “arrested” and put behind bars as their friends and business associates will post “bail” to get them released.  It’s all part of a fun and philanthropic effort to raise money for MDA and the people it serves in Cenla.  Cost:  Donations requested for participants bail.  Call Christina Griffin:  388-3221.
