Ongoing-February 5: 5x5x5 Show, River Oaks Square Arts Center Bolton Gallery. What started as an annual feature of miniature works of art and has grown into a nationally acclaimed, adjudicated show with entries from all over the United States. The aim for entries is to stick to 5-inch square dimensions for two-dimensional works and 5x5x5 inches for the three-dimensional. The judge for 2019 is American painter and author Alex Beard, who is probably best known for his elaborate wildlife compositions created in his signature style of gestural painting. Beard will also showcase his own recent work entitled “From Orleans to Rapides: Drawing and Paintings from the Sportsman’s Paradise” in the Stokes-Harris Gallery. Call: 318-473-2670.

January 17-19: Frozen, Jr., Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center. LBM Productions presents Frozen Jr., based on the 2018 Broadway musical, bringing Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life, onstage. The show features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, plus five new songs written for the Broadway production. January 30-February 9: City Park Players presents “Talking With…” by Jane Martin, Kress Theatre. “Talking With…” is a collection of sharp, bittersweet portraits of women, many of whom have reacted to disappointments by melting into private worlds. Idiosyncratic characters amuse, move, and frighten, always speaking from the depths of their souls. These eleven ten-minute monologues include a baton twirler, a fundamentalist snake handler, an ex-rodeo rider, and an actress willing to go to any length to get a job. It premiered at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York in 1982 and has been performed around the world. Directed locally by Theresa Louviere and Michael Dalme. Ongoing-January: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

January 8: Child Safety Seat Check, RRMC Medical Terrace Driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm.  A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to install the car seat. The car seat check process takes between 15-25 minutes, depending on how many car seats are in the vehicle. The seat checks normally are held the second Wednesday of each month. Cost: Free.

 

January 8: Diabetes Group Class, HP Long Classroom in Pineville, 3:00pm-6:00pm.  Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering this program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore, no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by a Registered Nurse and Registered Dietitian. January 18: Cenla Fly Fishing & Light Tackle Festival, Kees Park Civic Center, 8:30am-3:30pm. Hosted by the Kisatchie Fly Fishers club, the 3rd-ever Cenla Fly Fishing & Light Tackle Festival is a celebration of fine fishing.  Admission is free and open to the public.  There are expert seminars on fly fishing, bass fishing, marsh fishing and kayak fishing.  There’s also fly casting instruction, fly tying and lure making demonstrations, exhibitors, and much more. A lunch is available for a nominal charge.  There’s also a raffle with net proceeds to benefit The Food Bank of Central Louisiana and the KFF club’s conservation projects. Cost: Free.
