Ongoing-February 16: Hari & Deepti “Light by the Forest”, Alexandria Museum of Art.  AMoA officially connects its galleries to its luminary endeavors through this exhibition of internationally renowned husband-and-wife artists Hari and Deepti, who create cut paper shadow boxes which tell stories. Hari & Deepti will travel from India to Alexandria as artists in residence at AMoA. Their works delve into fantastic and imaginative subjects, exploring fairy tales and more with intricate designs and lights. The exhibition will also include a special feature, an installation made out of cut paper which will invite visitors to explore the work even more deeply as they walk through the artists’ creation! January 8: “This Is Modern Art” Screening, Alexandria Museum of Art, 5:30pm. Originally broadcast in 1999, “This Is Modern Art” was a six-part TV series written and presented by the English art critic Matthew Collings. The series won several awards including a BAFTA. It became popular both because of its sometimes jokey and sometimes thoughtful explanations of the work and attitude of a new wave of artists that had recently been publicized in the British mass media. As a continued exploration into the art and artists who were contemporaries and influences to the artists in the AMoA permanent collection, we will screen part two of this documentary series. January 15: The Science of Art. The Art of Science. Between the Folds., Alexandria Museum of Art, 5:30pm. In connection with Hari & Deepti: Light by the Forest, we will screen a short Balinese Shadow Puppet show which was a source of inspiration for the artists in the Winter exhibition. February 7: AMoA AfterHours Renegade Tour with Tony, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:00pm. Join us for our popular adult museum tour series featuring an unorthodox approach to visiting an art museum. Artist Tony McDonald, director of Gallery One Ellleven in Leesville, will be your guide through the galleries! Tony McDonald received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting and drawing from LSU in 1976. McDonald’s paintings and sculptures have been exhibited at the Alexandria Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, and numerous other galleries across the South. January 25: Lightwire Theatre’s “The Ugly Duckling”, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 7:00pm. Lightwire Theater is an award-winning company that produces glow-in-the-dark shows meant to entertain audiences of all ages. Their rendition of “The Ugly Duckling” is a classic story given an original and illuminated twist. A dazzling and high-tech production, the performance includes sets, costumes, puppets and props that light up in the dark through the innovative use of electroluminescent (EL) wires. January 31-February 10: CPP Presents “Jeeves in Bloom”, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre.  Directed by Mike White and Alana Pate, “Jeeves in Bloom” centers around Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet, Jeeves.  The peaceful English countryside may never be the same after Bertie and Jeeves pay a visit. Ongoing-January: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

January 9: Diabetes Group Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00pm. RRMC is offering a program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Chrystal Meginley, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat.
