Ongoing-February 16: Hari & Deepti “Light by the Forest”, Alexandria Museum of Art.  AMoA officially connects its galleries to its luminary endeavors through this exhibition of internationally renowned husband-and-wife artists Hari and Deepti, who create cut paper shadow boxes which tell stories. Hari & Deepti will travel from India to Alexandria as artists in residence at AMoA. Their works delve into fantastic and imaginative subjects, exploring fairy tales and more with intricate designs and lights. The exhibition will also include a special feature, an installation made out of cut paper which will invite visitors to explore the work even more deeply as they walk through the artists’ creation! January 8: “This Is Modern Art” Screening, Alexandria Museum of Art, 5:30pm. Originally broadcast in 1999, “This Is Modern Art” was a six-part TV series written and presented by the English art critic Matthew Collings. The series won several awards including a BAFTA. It became popular both because of its sometimes jokey and sometimes thoughtful explanations of the work and attitude of a new wave of artists that had recently been publicized in the British mass media. As a continued exploration into the art and artists who were contemporaries and influences to the artists in the AMoA permanent collection, we will screen part two of this documentary series. January 15: The Science of Art. The Art of Science. Between the Folds., Alexandria Museum of Art, 5:30pm. In connection with Hari & Deepti: Light by the Forest, we will screen a short Balinese Shadow Puppet show which was a source of inspiration for the artists in the Winter exhibition. We will also venture into other types of paper art with the award winning documentary, Between the Folds, about artists and scientists who have devoted their lives to origami and reinterpreting the medium of paper. February 7: AMoA AfterHours Renegade Tour with Tony, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:00pm. Join us for our popular adult museum tour series featuring an unorthodox approach to visiting an art museum. Artist Tony McDonald, director of Gallery One Ellleven in Leesville, will be your guide through the galleries! Tony McDonald received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting and drawing from LSU in 1976. McDonald’s paintings and sculptures have been exhibited at the Alexandria Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, and numerous other galleries across the South. January 27: Rapides Symphony Orchestra “Rare and Well Done”, St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, 2:30pm.  RSO is joined by piano soloist Nanette Kaplan Solomon to present some rarely heard works alongside some more well known pieces in different settings. January 27: Greater Vision in Concert, LC’s Guinn Auditorium, 3:00pm. Greater Vision has inspired audiences with their rich vocal blend and their effective ability to communicate the message of the gospel through song since 1990. January 25: Lightwire Theatre’s “The Ugly Duckling”, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 7:00pm. Lightwire Theater is an award-winning company that produces glow-in-the-dark shows meant to entertain audiences of all ages. Their rendition of “The Ugly Duckling” is a classic story given an original and illuminated twist. A dazzling and high-tech production, the performance includes sets, costumes, puppets and props that light up in the dark through the innovative use of electroluminescent (EL) wires. January 31-February 10: CPP Presents “Jeeves in Bloom”, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre.  Directed by Mike White and Alana Pate, “Jeeves in Bloom” centers around Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet, Jeeves.  The peaceful English countryside may never be the same after Bertie and Jeeves pay a visit. Ongoing-January: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

 

Ongoing-January: balance Meetings. balance – A group of people working on individual goals with emphasis on substance and alcohol abuse prevention meets each Monday and Thursday at 5:30pm and Wednesday at 12:00pm.  Meetings take place each Monday and Wednesday at the CLASS Office, located at 1785 Jackson Street in Alexandria.  Thursday meetings are held at the King Branch library, 1115 Broadway Avenue.  Call: 318-442-1010.

 

January 7: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 6:00pm-7:00pm. This is an on-going support group for parents and grandparents whose child has died. Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent. This group is sponsored by CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and meets on the first Monday of every month. Pre-registration is required. Check out

 

January 8: Healing Hearts Perinatal Loss Support Group, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Trellis Room, 6:00pm. The group helps parents who have lost babies. Call: 318-769-7569.

 

January 9: Diabetes Group Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00pm. RRMC is offering a program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Chrystal Meginley, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. January 9: Child Safety Seat Check, RRMC Medical Terrace Driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm. A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat. The car seat check process takes between 15-25 minutes, depending on how many car seats are in the vehicle. Cost: Free.

The Alexandria Museum of Art is partnering with our favorite knitting group, The Red River Stitchers to host a series of monthly stich-ins During the stitch ins, participants can learn to create scarves, hats and plastic mats for the homeless. A breastfeeding class for working moms, this class is designed to support working mothers who want to continue breastfeeding and need to know how to fit it into their daily schedule. February 9: 6th Annual Creative Con, Best Western of Alexandria, 9:00am-5:00pm. The Rapides Parish Library’s Creative Con is celebrating its sixth year of inspiring kids and adults to explore their creative side.  If you are a big fan of sci-fi/fantasy books, TV series, Maker Space, magic, art, video games, cosplay, acting, writing, robotics, 3D models and design, or any other type of creative medium, Creative Con is for you! There will be something for everyone to do and see, from speakers and discussion panels to costumes for both kids and adults. This class is for anyone interested in learning Tai Chi Chih.  Former students are welcome and encouraged to attend.  This class is open to any fitness level.  Come find out how to move the chi and experience meditation in motion.  Each week will build on the week before until everyone learns the 19 movements and one pose.  Dress is casual.  Please pre-register. January 11-12: Monster Truck Winter Nationals, Rapides Parish Coliseum, 7:30pm.  Featuring the biggest and baddest monster truck lineup ever, including: 2 Time World Champ Equalizer, Red Solo-The Party Truck, Buckshot, Venom, King Krunch, the Louisiana debut of Tantrum, and Sgt. Smash-the World’s Largest Monster Truck!  It will be two nights of destruction you will never forget! January 12, 19, 26 & February 2: Saturday Morning Qi Gong, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10:30am. The Alexandria Museum of Art and Rapides Regional Medical Center have partnered to present Healthy Living @AMoA. Paul Nettles of The Levee Tai Chi School leads a class in Qi Gong, which is an ancient system of coordinated body postures and movements combined with deep breathing and meditation.
