January 13: Adult Art Class-Totemic Sculptures, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10:30am-3:30pm. In Connell tradition, participants will create a sculpture of natural and found objects in the style of the totem and/or obelisk. January 26-February 24: Tom Peyton Memorial Arts Festival Exhibit Winners Highlights, Alexandria Museum of Art. This exhibition highlights works from the past 50 years of the Tom Peyton Memorial Arts Festival Exhibit. All works in this exhibition are on loan from the First United Methodist Church in Alexandria, where the Tom Peyton Memorial Arts Festival has been held throughout its history.  Cost: Regular admission. January 9: St. Paul’s Cathedral Connection, St. James Episcopal Church, 7:00pm.  The St. James Concert Series season continues with an organ concert presented by Mr. Simon Johnson, organist and assistant director of music at London’s famed St. Paul’s Cathedral. Mr. Johnson’s program repertoire will include works by Bach, Franck, Stanford, Elgar and will culminate with the royal Orb and Sceptre Coronation March composed by William Walton for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. January 28: Rapides Symphony Orchestra and Avant Chamber Ballet, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 2:30pm. Rapides Symphony will be joined by the Avant Chamber Ballet, a dance company from Dallas, to perform two of the most famous ballets in the entire repertoire, Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty.” Cost: $10.00-$25.00. January 6: Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun Auditions, Kress Theatre, 10:00am.  City Park Players will hold auditions for Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun, an emotionally-charged play that explores the relationship between a disabled man, Robert and a young pregnant woman, Holly. January 20: Arts Council of Cenla Presents Lightwire Theater, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 7:00pm. Lightwire Theater has been featured as semi-finalists on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and winners of Tru TV’s Fake Off. The group combines theater and technology to bring stories to life in complete darkness and are internationally recognized for their signature brand of electroluminescent artistry. January 25-28: One Act Play Festival, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre. Sponsored by Spectral Sisters Productions.  The five winning plays dealing with the complexity of human relationships, seen from the perspective of very different characters. Ongoing-January: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

 

January 6 & February 3: First Saturday Breakfast, Pineville Airport at Lake Buhlow, 7:00am-10:00am.  Breakfast is cooked up every month as a nonprofit event by the Experimental Aircraft Association for pilots flying-in, and everyone interested in aviation.  A spread of hearty vittles—all you want to eat and drink—will give you energy to kick off the day’s events.  Consider a trip to enjoy the venue of aircraft clubhouse, deck and lake along with airplane chatter and visiting. January 6: Breastfeeding Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am-3:00pm.  Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this one-day class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. January 10: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am-12:00pm.  This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore, no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. January 10: Child Safety Seat Check, RRMC Medical Terrace driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm. A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat. The car seat check process takes between 15-25 minutes, depending on how many car seats are in the vehicle. Cost: Free.

 

January 11: Crayons, Take Me Away, Rapides Main Library, 4:00pm-6:00pm. We’re having an adult social gathering where we’ll do some coloring, listen to some music and have a light snack. January 13: Movie Matinee Presents “Inside Out”, Robertson Branch Library, 2:00pm-4:00pm. Riley is a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Midwestern girl, but her world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley’s emotions — led by Joy — try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness to the forefront. January 20: Prepared Childbirth Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am-2:30pm. This one-day class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. As a service to the community, the YWCA will now provide a regularly scheduled American Heart Association CPR Certification Classes for both Healthcare Workers and the general public. The staff from Brookdale will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided.
