Jahnke Exhibit Shows Uncommon Perspective on Fast Food

ROA-pc-0213-frontRoss Jahnke has been influenced by artists like Jim Dine, Jacob Eli and June Wayne, but for his exhibit entitled Fast Food, it is probably most appropriate to quote artist Wayne Thiebaud: “Common objects become strangely uncommon when removed from their context and ordinary ways of being seen.” In his latest exhibit, Jahnke presents the visitor with the unique combination of traditional oil painting and printmaking he is known for.

It is his intent is to embody the “love-hate relationship” we have with fast food, displaying paintings and prints of familiar foods, highlighting a simple subject in what can be described as vivid simplification, often in the contrast of textures and colors that his technique makes possible. His conceptual approach to the figure is combined with his use of screen printing to invigorate and delineate space.

“One of the interesting qualities of this exhibit is the limited palette of subject matter,” says Aubrey Bolen, Artistic Director at River Oaks Square Arts Center. “Ross delves deep into the subject matter and shows us that art can be in the simplest details. His last exhibit was one of the crowd favorites, so we are delighted to host another one of his exhibits.” Jahnke, who is also the recipient of the coveted Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellowship, has seen his work exhibited across the United States.

While Jahnke’s work is displayed in the Main Gallery, River Oaks’ Photographer’s Guild will have their exhibit in the Galerie des Amis and an exhibit entitled “Recent Works” by Jason Gray will be featured in the Stokes-Harris Gallery. The exhibit opening reception will take place on February 22nd from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and is sponsored by Jacquie’s Catering.
