Retinol is a form of vitamin A that plays an important role in anti-aging skin care. The purest most active form of Vitamin A—retinoids—resurface and rejuvenate the skin, helping to clear and smooth all skin types. With more and more skin care lines including retinol in their formulations, it is important to learn about this ingredient and the effect it has on your skin.

Retinol is the whole vitamin A molecule, which can be broken down into smaller components including an acid called tretinoin, the active ingredient in Retin-A and Renova. Both are prescriptions and have to be filled by your physician. Retinol is the most important vitamin for the appearance of your skin. Its molecule is small enough to penetrate the skin’s surface and works to repair collagen and elastin. Retinol is vitamin A in its purest form and penetrates deep into the skin to gradually smooth fine lines, wrinkles and increases moisture to the complexion. Retinol is a beneficial anti-oxidant creating stronger, healthier cells and increases the skins support.

Retinol has been used in the management of acne and keratosis (pre-cancer cells). The most common contributor to acne breakouts is a bacteria found in the pores of the skin. When these pores are clogged and blocked, the bacteria produce a chemical to try and unclog the pore, subsequently leaving behind an inflamed pimple. Retinol, for acne treatments, is among the best products to combat this skin condition. Retinol stimulates new cell growth and stimulates exfoliation leaving the skin smoother, softer and more radiant.

Retinol comes in many forms. Creams are thicker and are most commonly used to moisturize and nourish. Lotions have a more liquid texture. Serums are used for oily skins, but are actually best for penetrating the layers of skin. Serums can be used for all types of skin. Also retinol comes in hand lotion, lip treatments and eye creams. All work well to decrease premature aging.

Retinol, a component of vitamin A, is known for its amazing ability to dramatically improve the appearance of the skins surface to smooth away wrinkles, decrease fine lines, even out rough spots and discoloration.
