Last year, I agreed to do a solo show at River Oaks Arts Center to open in March, 2012. I had never done a show where the sole responsibility for the theme and all the paintings fell on my shoulders.
Prior to agreeing to do the solo show, I had struggled for an idea for a piece for a group show. I literally opened the dictionary for “words” of inspiration. I got no further than the “B’s”. I painted a Boston terrier mesmerized by blueberries and Brussels sprouts circling his befuddled head. The dog painting struck a chord with animal lovers (and maybe art lovers), and eventually dogs became the theme for my current show, Gone to the Dogs.
Preston Gilchrist, the artistic director at River Oaks—and an accomplished artist himself—stated I would need about fifteen to seventeen pieces, depending on their size. This was somewhat daunting since I had not one single painting, as the first dog piece had sold to someone out of state.
Many weeks of work and many dog paintings (and one cat painting) later, I think I am ready for the unveiling. I hope the show entertains and uplifts the viewers, as that is my intent.
