February 28: VOCES8 “The Art of Expression”, St. James Episcopal Church, 7:00pm. Phenomenal British vocal ensemble, VOCES8, returns to Cenla to present “The Art of Expression: Music of the Renaissance”. This program charts some of the most prolific and influential European composers of the age, with a reflection on their legacy through the response of contemporary composers. Immediately following the conclusion of the concert, there will be a reception in the adjacent St. James Parish Hall where audience members may greet the singers and enjoy light refreshments. February 29: Keith Sweat in Concert, Paragon Casino Resort Mari Center, 7:00pm. Keith Douglas Sweat is an American singer, songwriter, and an early figure in the new jack swing musical movement.  He is known for his collection of hits including “I Want Her”, “Make It Last Forever”, I’ll Give All My Love to You”, Make You Sweat”, Get Up o It”, “Twisted” and “Nobody”.  He has released 13 solo albums and two as a part of the R&B supergroup LSG, and discovered the groups Silk and Kut Klose. Ongoing-February 9: City Park Players presents “Talking With…” by Jane Martin, Kress Theatre. “Talking With…” is a collection of sharp, bittersweet portraits of women, many of whom have reacted to disappointments by melting into private worlds. Idiosyncratic characters amuse, move, and frighten, always speaking from the depths of their souls. These eleven ten-minute monologues include a baton twirler, a fundamentalist snake handler, an ex-rodeo rider, and an actress willing to go to any length to get a job. It premiered at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York in 1982 and has been performed around the world. Directed locally by Theresa Louviere and Michael Dalme. Performances begin nightly Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm; Sunday matinees begin at 2:30pm. Ongoing-February: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

 

Ongoing-February: balance Meetings. balance – A group of people working on individual goals with emphasis on substance and alcohol abuse prevention meets each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm and Wednesday at 12:00pm.  Meetings take place each Monday and Wednesday at the CLASS Office, 1785 Jackson Street in Alexandria. Tuesday meetings are held at the Rapides Parish Main Library, 411 Washington Street in downtown Alexandria. February 10: Good Mourning Widowed Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11:00am-12:00pm. This is an ongoing support group for men and women whose spouse has died.  There will be group sharing time and this group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to those who are newly grieving.  The Mourning Widowed Support Group meets on the second Monday of each month and is sponsored by CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Check our Face Book page: CHRISTUS Widowed and Widowers. February 11: Making It Work, RRMC Gallery Room, 6:00pm-8:00pm. A breastfeeding class for working moms, this class is designed to support working mothers who want to continue breastfeeding and need to know how to fit it into their daily schedule. The class will focus on management of milk supply and offer strategies to sustain pumping.  Other topics include types of pumps, storage and handling of milk and strategies to prevent problems. February 12: Child Safety Seat Check, RRMC Medical Terrace Driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm.  A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to install the car seat. The car seat check process takes between 15-25 minutes, depending on how many car seats are in the vehicle. The seat checks normally are held the second Wednesday of each month. Cost: Free.

The route begins on College Boulevard, travels down Main Street, crosses the Jackson Street Bridge into Alexandria, turns onto Third Street and ends at Johnston Street. The parade features Cody Ford, Buffalo Bills Offensive Tackle and Pineville High graduate, as the Grand Marshal. Enjoy lighted floats and area junior high and high school bands resounding through the streets. Cost: Free.

The 2020 Children’s Parade Grand Marshal is Chanley Patterson, Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen 2019. Children are then invited to celebrate Mardi Gras at the Alexandria Zoo for the annual Mardi Gras Party at 2:00pm!

The parade will start at the River South Common shopping center (Stage) parking lot; turning right onto South Drive; turning left at Keyser Avenue; crossing the Keyser bridge and turning right on Jefferson Street, continuing onto Front Street; turning left onto Texas Street; and turning left onto Second Street to Church Street to end the parade route. February 23: 27th Annual Krewes Parade, Alexandria, 2:00pm. The parade begins on Texas Avenue and ending on North Mall Boulevard. The Krewes Parade Grand Marshal is Layon Gray, a writer director and native of Alexandria. The Central Louisiana Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee hosts a viewing stand with snacks during the Krewes parade located in the Sears parking lot for anyone with a Military I.D. and their families. February 23: Mardi Gras Finale Royale, Huckleberry Brewing Company, 4:00pm. Food trucks will be on hand for those that are hungry and all draft beers will be $5.00. A king cake eating contest will take place during the evening with King Cakes provided by Doce Vida Brazilian Bakery. Cost: Free.

 

February 24: Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11:00am-1:00pm. This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia. We offer educational handouts, sharing time, and lunch is provided. February 24: Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Cabrini Mediplex, 11:00am-12:30pm. The staff from Brookdale Assisted Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided. February 8, 15, 22, 29 & March 7: Saturday Morning Qi Gong, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10:30am. The Alexandria Museum of Art and Rapides Regional Medical Center have partnered to present Healthy Living @AMoA. Paul Nettles of The Levee Tai Chi School leads a class in Qi Gong, which is an ancient system of coordinated body postures and movements combined with deep breathing and meditation. February 8: Kids Yoga, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10:30am. The Alexandria Museum of Art and Rapides Regional Medical Center have partnered to present Healthy Living @AMoA. February 12, 19, 26 & March 4: Tai Chi Chih Classes, Cabrini Mediplex, 9:30am-10:30am. .  If you are a former Tai Chi student or brand new, come join us as we learn the 19 movements and 1 pose of Tai Chi Chih.  This beautiful soothing practice is meditation in motion.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.  Classes will be held every Wednesday morning in February. March 5-7: 2020 Red River Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament, Rapides Parish Coliseum.  The LSUA Generals host the RRAC basketball tournament as it returns to the Rapides Parish Coliseum for the first time since 2017. The 2020 version of the tournament will again have the top six men’s and women’s teams in the conference battling it out over three days and three rounds to see who will earn the tournament championship and automatic berths into the respective NAIA national tournaments. rpclive.org
