Ongoing-February: Arts & Healthcare, Inc. Exhibit.  The CHRISTUS Cabrini Gallery (Cabrini Outpatient Center, 1st floor across from Radiology) will feature art by Karen Faulk. Ongoing-February 16: Hari & Deepti “Light by the Forest”, Alexandria Museum of Art.  AMoA officially connects its galleries to its luminary endeavors through this exhibition of internationally renowned husband-and-wife artists Hari and Deepti, who create cut paper shadow boxes which tell stories. Hari & Deepti will travel from India to Alexandria as artists in residence at AMoA. Their works delve into fantastic and imaginative subjects, exploring fairy tales and more with intricate designs and lights. The exhibition will also include a special feature, an installation made out of cut paper which will invite visitors to explore the work even more deeply as they walk through the artists’ creation! February 9: Forging Fibers: Paper Making Workshop for Adults, Alexandria Museum of Art, 1:00pm-4:00pm. Learn traditional yet simple paper making techniques using a variety of textures and ‘rags’ to create a layered composition. Objectives will focus on proper preparation of materials, applications and drying techniques that will provide participants the knowledge to create more works on their own. February 15-March 30: River Oaks 35th Anniversary Exhibitions, River Oaks Arts Center.  Featuring “Feathers & Fins” by Andrew Jackson Pollack; “What WOOD We Imagine” by Janet Ahrens & Tish Fresh; “Color of Hope” by  Carla Guillory, Penny Abraham & Artists from Hope House; and recent works by JoAnne K. Ongoing-February 10: CPP Presents “Jeeves in Bloom”, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre.  Directed by Mike White and Alana Pate, “Jeeves in Bloom” centers around Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet, Jeeves.  The peaceful English countryside may never be the same after Bertie and Jeeves pay a visit. February 15-17: OLPS Presents “Mary Poppins, Jr.”, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center. February 24: Wardrobes and Rings, Martin Performing Arts Center at Louisiana College, 3:00pm.  In “Wardrobes and Rings,” Lewis and Tolkien, as portrayed by British actors David Payne and Gordon Tett, meet for one last visit, tempered by thawing humor, confession, and reconciliation. Ongoing-February: New Hope Al-Anon Group, Horseshoe Drive Methodist Church in Alexandria, 7:00pm.  The New Hope Al-Anon Group meets each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Al-Anon is a mutual support group for anyone having experienced a problem with someone else’s drinking or addiction. You are free to ask questions or to talk about your situation or just listen. Every meeting is different. Each meeting has the autonomy to be run as its members choose, within guidelines designed to promote Al-Anon unity. Cost: Free.

 

Ongoing-February: balance Meetings. balance – A group of people working on individual goals with emphasis on substance and alcohol abuse prevention meets each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm and Wednesday at 12:00pm.  Meetings take place each Monday and Wednesday at the CLASS Office, 1785 Jackson Street in Alexandria. Tuesday meetings are held at the Rapides Parish Main Library, 411 Washington Street in downtown Alexandria. A trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat. February 13: Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre, 7:00pm. “Don’t Get Trouble in Your Mind: The Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Story” is a documentary portrait of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, an African-American string band from Raleigh, North Carolina, and their mentor, fiddler Joe Thompson (1919—2012). The film captures how three musicians from the hip-hop generation embraced a 19th Century genre and took it to new heights, and the untold story of how blacks and whites collaborated to create the earliest forms of American popular music. March 2: Mardi Gras Party, Alexandria Zoo, 2:00pm-4:00pm. The animals are askin’ for you at Alexandria Zoo! Don your purple, green and gold and parade over to the Zoo for the Mardi Gras Party. Sink your teeth into a delicious slice of Atwood’s Bakery king cake, mambo to live music, and visit with costume characters. March 3: AMGA Mardi Gras Krewes Parade, 2:00pm. The 20119 AMGA Krewes Parade will roll down Texas Avenue to Masonic, Memorial, North Boulevard, ending at the Alexandria Mall. Military Veteran and Alcohol/Tobacco-Free Parade viewing areas will be available. Cost: Free.

 

March 4: Bereaved Parents Support Group BPUSA, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 6:00pm-7:00pm. This is an on-going support group for parents and grandparents whose child has died. Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent, grandparent or adult sibling. This group is sponsored by CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and meets on the first Monday of every month. Pre-registration is required. March 6: Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, Hearn Stage at Kress Theatre, 7:00pm. “Bathtubs Over Broadway” follows Steve Young on his quest to uncover all he can about the hidden world of corporate musicals. While delving into treasure troves of forgotten archives, tracking down rare albums, unearthing unseen footage, and rediscovering composers and performers, Steve comes to form unlikely friendships and discovers how this discarded musical genre starring tractors and bathtubs was bigger than Broadway. February 9, 16, 23 & March 2: Saturday Morning Qi Gong, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10:30am. The Alexandria Museum of Art and Rapides Regional Medical Center have partnered to present Healthy Living @AMoA. Paul Nettles of The Levee Tai Chi School leads a class in Qi Gong, which is an ancient system of coordinated body postures and movements combined with deep breathing and meditation.
