Ongoing-December: Arts & Healthcare, Inc. Art Exhibits.  Arts & Healthcare, Inc. will feature the art of Candy Christophe at the Christus Gallery for Reflection and Healing, Cabrini Outpatient Center, 1st floor across from Radiology.  The art of Amanda Wolford is being featured at the Rapides Gallery located in the South Tower between the ER and the lobby. These exhibits are open to the public with most of the art available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Arts & Healthcare, Inc. Cost: Free. Ongoing-February 20: Aaron Douglas & Arna Bontemps: Partners in Activism, Alexandria Museum of Art.  The Alexandria Museum of Art and Arna Bontemps African American Museum have partnered to display this exhibition highlighting artist Aaron Douglas and author Arna Bontemps.  Both men were professors at Fisk University in Nashville and were involved in the Harlem Renaissance.  Paintings and Illustrations by Douglas will be paired with writings by Bontemps to create a unique exhibition of work by two influential African American artists and educators. Ongoing-February 20: Harmonic Fascination: The Art of Max Papart, Alexandria Museum of Art.  Max Papart, born in France in 1911, was a diverse artist with a clear vision.  After learning classical artistic practices, he determined that they were not for him, adopting a more abstract, surrealist style.  Papart moved to New Orleans in 1979 after multiple visits to the United States, and his new location continued to influence his work.  His prints and paintings are filled with color and symbolism.  This AMoA 4.0 Beta Exhibition will look into Papart’s artistic development, from his classical drawing through his paintings, prints, and his exploration of a few other mediums. Ongoing-February 20: On Ancient Wings: The Sandhill Cranes of North America, Alexandria Museum of Art.  Using traditional film photography, On Ancient Wings: The Sandhill Cranes of North America presents 38 color photographs from the award-winning book by internationally known conservation photographer Michael Forsberg. Whooping cranes, the species found in Louisiana, were added to the endangered species list in 1967. This led to the development of an experimental population at the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area in 2011.  This exhibition serves to highlight the cranes as well as the work to preserve this species in Louisiana and other locations throughout the country. Nature is a prominent theme in Southern art and photography, as well as in AMoA’s collection. January 8: Amahl and the Night Visitors, St. James Epsicopal Church,7:00pm.  The St. James Episcopal Church Concert Series continues with a concert staged performance of Gian Carlo Menotti’s beloved one act opera.  Michael Sterne, Music Director of St. James, will conduct a quintet of instrumentalists from the piano. Soloists include St. James’ own Garroway Nance as Amahl and Greenville, SC soprano Kathryn Knauer as the Mother. This is an on-going support group for parents, grandparents whose child has died.  Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent. December 7: Sibling Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:30pm-8:00pm.. This class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. December 9: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9:00am – Noon. This program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. December 9: LOPA Tree of Life Ceremony, Rapides Regional Medical Center South Tower Lobby, 10:00am. Rapides Regional Medical Center joins with the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency as it recognizes donors and their families during the holiday season. December 9: Child Safety Seat Check, RRMC Medical Terrace driveway, 2:00pm-5:00pm. In this event, a trained child passenger safety educator will take a look at your car seats, make sure they are not under recall, make sure the seat is installed properly and show you how to correctly install the car seat. The car seat check process takes between 15-25 minutes, depending on how many car seats are in the vehicle. The seat checks normally are held the second Wednesday of each month. Cost: Free.

December 17: H2O-Helping 2 Overcome Homelessness, Emmanuel Baptist Church Parking Lot, 10:00am–Noon. Sponsored by Volunteers of America. H2O is a monthly homeless street outreach that provides instant, on-site services such as housing resources, medical screenings, haircuts and more.  Community partners provide a hot meal, clothing, food, eater, and hygiene kits.  Cost: Free. December 21: The Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Cabrini Mediplex Serenity Room, 11:00am – 12:30pm.  The activity group will be offered for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The staff from Brookdale Senior Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call Becky Watkins: 318-448-6938.
