Cherry-Berry Beans

The hot, busy days of August require good nutrition to stay on course. This is especially true for children, who should be encouraged to drink plenty of low sugar drinks during activity periods: water, fruit juices, and low fat milk.  Meals and snacks should include plenty of fruits, vegetables and grains, rather than high fat and fried snacks. This recipe is for a simple dish that children seem to love, and most will eat it happily. Cherry-berry beans is a kid-inspired dish that adults will enjoy as well. It has no cherries or berries, but it is good, and kids seem to love it.

1 (12 Ounce) Package Frozen French Green Beans, Thawed, Drained
-or-
1 15 Ounce Can Beans, Drained
2 Tablespoons Margarine, Melted
3 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
2 Teaspoons Soy Sauce
1 Tablespoon Bacon Bits

Place green beans in baking dish. Combine margarine, brown sugar, and soy sauce and pour over beans. Sprinkle bacon bits over top of beans. Cover and chill until time to bake.  Bake in 350° oven until beans are hot and bubbly. Seasoning may need adjusting if canned drained beans are used, because of salt content in canned beans.
