In asking leading eye surgeon Robert Bruce Wallace, III, MD to deliver a keynote address at their annual meeting in Stirling, Scotland, the Scottish Ophthalmological Society could not have picked a better venue than the ‘Wallace Room’ at Stirling University’s executive conference center. “Being asked to address the most distinguished eye surgeons and ophthalmological residents in Scotland was a great honor for me,” said Dr. Wallace, a third generation Cenla physician who’s Scottish roots run deep in the Stirling area. “But presenting in the Wallace Room of Stirling University was very emotional, and something I will remember always.”
Scotland’s Stirling University stands in the shadow of The National Wallace Monument, a 220-foot gothic tower commemorating William Wallace and his famous victory at Stirling Bridge, which was depicted in the Academy Award winning movie ‘Braveheart’. Nearby Stirling Castle is adorned by a large statue of Robert the Bruce, Dr. Wallace’s namesake. “I have a son named William Wallace, who named his son Stirling, so it was a special blessing for me to be asked to address the Scottish Ophthalmological Club and experience the history and welcoming people of Stirling, Scotland. I was proud to represent Central Louisiana and the great team of staff and doctors I work with in my practice.”
The Scottish Ophthalmological Club has a storied history that began in 1911 and is one of the oldest eye care organizations in the world. The purpose of their annual meetings is to demonstrate interesting ophthalmological cases and showcase new methods and instruments for the practice of ophthalmology.
Dr. Wallace spoke on the latest advances in Refractive Cataract Surgery, which is the ability to correct ‘refractive error’ (nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism) at the same time of a cataract procedure. Refractive Cataract Surgery is becoming popular in the United States and Europe because it allows cataract patients to enjoy a broader, less restricted range of vision following surgery. It is also designed to help reduce or eliminate the need for prescription glasses after surgery. “This is one of the most exciting times in cataract surgery today,” said Dr. Wallace. With the breakthroughs we’ve helped pioneer in lens implant technology and the advances we’re seeing in cataract diagnostics and lasers, there has truly never been a better time to be considering cataract surgery than right now.”
Dr. Wallace dedicated his presentation to his father and grandfather, both physicians who practiced in Central Louisiana. This year, Dr. Wallace was the only speaker from outside of the UK invited to address the Scottish Ophthalmological Club.
