Blink

The other night I was watching “Meet Joe Black” with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins.  When it came to the scene where Anthony Hopkins was at his birthday party making his speech, one line that he said really jumped out at me.  In that fabulous Anthony Hopkins voice and slight accent, he said, “Sixty five years–it goes by in a blink doesn’t it?”  Perhaps the reason it really struck a chord with me was because I have a birthday this month (no, it’s not my sixty-fifth).  I started thinking about blinking and how quickly time really does go by.  I’m very sure that, not that long ago, I was in high school doing high school things, laughing with my friends and planning our next adventures.  Then I blink, and in two years, my youngest child will be in high school.  It seems just a day or so ago that I had my first child.  I still remember how it felt to be pregnant, how it felt to hold her for the first time, the wonder of knowing she was a part of me—something I had created.  I blink and this month, and that child will have a child of her own.

I can still smell my Daddy’s cologne, and when I hear his favorite music, I can hear him singing along.  I blink and he’s been gone fifteen years.  I have a friend whose life was just like everyone else’s, going to her job, raising a family, being a good wife and steward of the community.  She blinked and one morning found a lump in her breast and her life will never be the same.

A blink, it can happen just that fast.  Everything can change and you can never go back to the way it was because you blinked and you are no longer the same person as before.  You may be a better person, a wiser, stronger person, but you will never be the same as before you blinked.   Savor every moment, no matter your stage or age in life because one thing is certain–nothing stays the same, and it all happens in a blink.
