August 18: Museum After Hours Acoustic Concert Series, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:30-8:30pm.  Join us at the Alexandria Museum of Art for a casual, coffeehouse style concert each month.  This month promises a foot-stompin’ good time with Rev. August 28:  Dan Hill Memorial Concert, Presser Recital Hall, Weathersby Fine Arts Building on the Louisiana College Campus, 3p.m.  Sponsored by Guitars in the Classroom, Manna House and Red River Music.  The featured performer will be internationally acclaimed pianist, Richard Dowling from New York City. Richard will play classical favorites, Gershwin and ragtime. The concert will honor the memory of local pianist, Dan Hill who passed away unexpectedly last summer. It will also raise funds for local Arts Education programs. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to donate to Manna House. August 6: One Day Breastfeeding Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center, Medical Terrace, Gallery Room, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by lactation educator and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. August 6: The Big Latch On, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 10:00-11:00am.  Rapides Regional Medical Center is happy to host Central Louisiana’s first “Big Latch On” with the help of the Central Louisiana Breastfeeding Coalition and Birth Rite Louisiana. This event is designed to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. Women and their babies should arrive no later than 10 a.m. to  register. At 10:30 a.m., participants will breastfeed their infants for 1 minute – and try to set a world record for synchronized nursing in multiple locations. Refreshments and door prizes will be available. August 8: The Morning Widowed Persons Support Group, Power Center, 10:00am-11:30am.  This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. This month our focus: Who Am I? There will be group sharing time and this group has trained Outreach Volunteers who are available to the newly grieving.  Please plan to dine with us after the meeting. August 8: Diabetes Support & Activity Group, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital Conference Room, 6:00pm.  This group will support all diabetics (Type 1 and Type 2)  in Cenla. Topic this month is on Exercise and the importance of exercise and how it helps control blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, circulation, etc.  Guest speaker will be Calleen Eyre, Program Manager at Louisiana Athletic Club in Pineville. August 8: Girl Talk, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. This two hour workshop is designed specifically for pre-teen girls ages 8-12 and their mother, father, aunt or grandmother. The class provides an opportunity for daughters and their loved one to discuss and understand the developmental changes that happen during the pre-teen years. August 9: Senior Lifestyles Diabetes Health, Rapides Parish Senior Citizens’ Center in Boyce,10:30 a.m. Rapides Regional Medical Center teams up with Rapides Senior Citizens Centers to offer on-site health screenings and information on diabetes and wound care. August 9: Mommy Talk – A Teenage Pregnancy Education Program, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital Conference Room, 5:00-7:00pm.  This fun and informative class is especially designed for the “on the go” teenage expectant mom and her support group/family.  Special emphasis is given to the continuing needs of teenagers such as health and fitness, nutrition, staying in school, resources for pregnant mom, as well as the labor and delivery process. Classes will be taught by a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Childbirth Educator.  Pre-registration is required.   Cost: Free.

August 11: ALS Support Group, Gallery Room, second floor RRMC Medical Terrace Building, 6 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.  This monthly support group is designed for ALS patients, their family members, friends and caregivers. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month. Patients who attend will have access to companies which provide services for ALS patients, such as physical therapy or wheelchair repair. August 13: Diabetes Group Class, Rapides Women’s & Children’s Hospital Trellis Room, 9:00am – 12:00noon.  This program is designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. August 18: AARP Driver Safety Program, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Auditorium, 8:30am.  This course is designed for those 50 or older. August 18: Parkinson’s Support Group, Power Center, 11:00am.   This group meets on the third Thursday of each month and is open to anyone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their family/caregiver.  We offer educational handouts and programs plus a chance to share with others. August 20: Prepared Childbirth Class (One Day), RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am – 2:00pm. This class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. August 20: Childbirth Class, Christus Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital 1st Floor Conference Room, 9:30am – 4:00pm. This class is designed especially for expecting couples from early pregnancy through the delivery process. All classes are taught by certified childbirth educators. Cost: $30.

August 22:  Sibling Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. This class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10.
