Though their marriage seems happy on the surface, Nora has had to sacrifice her honor and personhood. In 1879, a woman couldn’t vote, couldn’t conduct business without her husband’s permission, and could not refuse her husband’s sexual advances. SSP’s production of “A Doll’s House” is set in 1959, when a woman could vote, but was otherwise still subject to her husband’s control. A blackmailer threatens to reveal a crime Nora committed to save her husband’s life. Disillusioned by her husband’s response, Nora realizes she has to change her life—to grow up and be a reasonable human being with a mind of her own—or end her life. Her decision shocked audiences in 1879 and will make current audiences think about what it means to be a human being and what it means to love one.
