Ongoing – August 24:  Pulp Icons: Stewart Nachmias, Alexandria Museum of Art, 10a.m.-5p.m. Tues.-Fri., 10a.m.-4p.m. Sat.  A group exhibition of contemporary Native artists explores created spaces transcending time and place. The illusion of a singular identity is unraveled through contemporary reworkings of weaving, performance, beadwork, storytelling, mythology, and symbolism, infusing both historical and contemporary processes and references. August 5: “Plein Air Painting” Adult Art Class, Alexandria Museum of Art, 8:30-11:30am.  Learn how to paint landscapes ‘en plein air’ (in the open air) with Artist Margie Tate at this outdoor workshop. August 13-17: Lilly Oncology On Canvas Art Exhibit, Rapides Cancer Center. Artwork from the 2012 Lilly Oncology On Canvas competition will be on display at the Rapides Cancer Center.  In 2004, Lilly Oncology created Lilly Oncology On Canvas to help people affected by cancer cope with the emotional side of the disease. This biennial competition, presented by Lilly Oncology and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), invites people from the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, who were diagnosed with any type of cancer – as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers – to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning.  Call: (318) 769-7200. www.lillyoncologyoncanvas.com

 

August 17:  AMoA Family Art Class:  Contemporary Native Art, Alexandria Museum of Art, 1-3p.m.  Families and kids of all ages will explore ancient Native art-making techniques, such as weaving, with a modern twist, after discussing the work of contemporary Native artists.  Cost:  Admission free for AMoA members, $20 per member family.   Call Jenny Gallent:  443-3458.

September 6: Member Preview Reception & Artists’ Talk, Alexandria Museum of Art, 6:00-8:00pm.  The 27th Annual September Competition presented by the Alexandria Museum of Art is an annual juried exhibition selected from national and international submissions highlighting contemporary art practices in all media. August 10: The Muse Back-to-School Youth Open Mic Night, Alexandria Museum of Art, 4:00-6:00pm.  Come hear CenLA teens weave words and speak to the beat of their own souls! Hosted by The Muse: AMoA’s teens, this event gives teens across Central Louisiana a chance to express themselves through the spoken word.  Participants must be between the ages of 14-21. August 3:  Breastfeeding Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this one-day class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. August 5: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Power Center, 6:30-7:30pm.  This is an on-going support group for parents, grandparents whose child has died.  Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent.  This group is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and meets on the first Monday of every month.   Pre-registration is required. August 12: The Morning Widowed Persons Support Group, Power Center, 10:00am-11:30am.  This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. August 14: Diabetes Group Class, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9 a.m. – Noon. Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering a free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program; therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian, and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. August 15: AARP Driver Safety Program, RRMC Medical Terrace Auditorium, 8:30am. This one day, four-hour class is designed for those 50 or older. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10.
