August 27: A-Town Jazz, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, 6:30p.m.  The Arts Council of Central Louisiana announces the opening of its new jazz club “A-Town Jazz” in the lobby of the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center.  Artists at the premier feature the Lukejazz trio of Natchitoches, New Orleans singer Tiffany Pollack and Frances Johanson.  Cash bar available.  Cost: $20.  Call: (318) 443-4718.

August 28: Smithfield Fair in Concert, Alexandria Museum of Art, 7:00pm.  The acoustic singer/songwriting trio of Smithfield Fair returns to the Alexandria Museum of Art! Brothers Bob Smith and Dudley-Brian Smith and wife, Jan Smith, along with guest guitarist, David Praet will entertain with their unique sound–a blend of gospel, jazz, folk, classical, pop, and Celtic elements. August 19-22:  Cotton Patch Gospel, Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center, Thurs.-Sat. 7p.m., Sun. 2:30p.m.  Sponsored by Lagniappe Theatre Company.  “The Greatest Story Ever Retold,” it is the telling of the Gospel of Matthew set in Gainesville, GA.  Full of great southern gospel music and beautiful storytelling, this award winning show will touch your heart and tickle your funny bone.  Cost:  $10-$15.  Call Karen Burns:  48-STAGE.

Ongoing-August 17:  YWCA Summer Day Camp, 5912 James St., 7a.m.-6p.m.  Sponsored by YWCA. Camp is packed full of fun activities like indoor and out door games, arts and crafts, swimming, field trips and Friday Finales.  Cost:  $45 registration, $10 membership, $50 activity fee, $75 per week ($5 discount per child). August 7: One Day Breastfeeding Class, Medical Terrace Gallery Room at RRMC, 9:00am – 3:00pm.  Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience.  August 7:  A Night of Hope – An American Cancer Society Gala, Convention Hall, 7p.m.-12a.m.  Sponsored by the American Cancer Society.  The nostalgia of the American Bandstand comes to Cenla!  Relive the 50s and 60s with music by The Dots; enjoy great food and two auctions all to benefit American Cancer Society.  Cost:  $100 per ticket or $300 for patron couple.  Call Christina Griffin:  648-7178.

August 9:  MOMS Club Meeting, First United Methodist Church in Alexandria, 10:00 a.m.  This is an international, non-profit organization that provides support to stay at home moms in the Alexandria/Pineville area.  Children are welcome.  Contact:  momsclubofalexandriaarea@hotmail.com.

August 9:  Sibling Class, Trellis Room, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m.  This class is offered to children expecting a little brother or sister. It helps them understand where mom is when the baby is being born and lets them know how important it is to become a big brother or sister. The ideal age for this class is 3-10. August 10: Patience Quilters, West Side Regional Library, 6:30pm.  Patience Quilters meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at West Side Regional Library, located at 5416 Provine Place in Alexandria, off Highway 28 West. August 12: Diabetes Group Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Trellis Room, 9:00a.m.-Noon.  Sponsored by Rapides Regional Medical Center.  Program for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and those needing a refresher course in diabetes management.  No physician referral required.  Taught by registered dietitian and registered nurse.  Space is limited.  Cost:  Free.  Call:  887-801-8441 or www.rapidesregional.com.

 August 12:  Back to School Bingo Bash, Convention Hall, 4-6p.m.  Sponsored by the City of Alexandria Division of Community Services.  Students grades K-12 are invited to play Bingo for prizes ranging from school supplies, sporting equipment and back packs.  Cost:  $1 per child.  Call:  449-5228.

August 12: ALS Support Group, Rapides Regional Medical Center Medical Terrace Building Gallery Room, 6:00pm – 7:30pm.  This monthly support group is designed for ALS patients, their family members, friends and caregivers. The group will meet the second Thursday of each month. Patients who attend will have access to companies which provide services for ALS patients, such as physical therapy or wheelchair repair.  August 14: Prepared Childbirth Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center, Medical Terrace, Gallery Room, 2nd floor, 9a.m.-2p.m.  Sponsored by Rapides Regional Medical Center.  Certified childbirth instructor helps prepare couples for actual delivery.  A tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital and light lunch will be provided.  Cost:  $30 per family, waived if delivering at RW&CH.  Call:  887-801-8441 or www.rapidesregional.com.

August 16: Cancer Support Group, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, Noon.  If you or someone you know has cancer, or you are a caretaker of someone with cancer, please join this group on the third Monday of each month. Marc Barrett, Rapides Cancer Treatment Center director and medical physicist, will be the guest speaker. Barrett will speak about the “Role of Physics in Radiation.”  A light meal will be served. August 20 – 21: Les Fest, Alexandria Zoo, 6:30pm (Fri), 9:00am (Sun).  Enjoy a weekend of fun, food, and music at Les Fest, a unique two-day event featuring an evening of live music, a 5K run and fun walk, and a free day with fun activities for the whole family.  It’s the zoo’s way of raising ‘fun and funds’ in hopes of continuing Les Whitt’s grand vision for the Alexandria Zoo.  Whitt was Zoo Director from 1974 until his death in August 2008.  All proceeds from Les Fest will go to zoo projects.  Cost: $15 advance, $20 at gate.  Call: 318-441-6810.

August 22: Lobster Dinner 2010, Tunk’s Cypress Inn, 6:30pm.  Hope House of Central Louisiana is an empowerment based organization that has been providing transitional housing to homeless women and children since 1989.  We need the communities help in building future’s full of hope.  Hope House is holding its annual fundraiser, Lobster Dinner 2010, featuring a silent auction with over 50 items up for bid in addition to a fabulous lobster dinner.  Cost: $75.

August 26: Muscular Dystrophy Support Group, Gallery Room, Medical Terrace at Rapides Regional Medical Center, 6 p.m. Meetings include guest speakers and access to staff from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Call (800) 644-9730.
