Misconceptions About Health Care and Chiropractic
Bradley F. Kirzner, DC

If I had a dollar for every time said to me, “Well if I start going to a chiropractor, then I will have to continue the rest of my life,” I could probably end world hunger.  Well let me ask you these questions, “If you eat today, does that mean you have to eat the rest of your life? If you start an exercise program, do you have to exercise for the rest of your life? If you brush your teeth today does that mean you have to brush them for the rest of your life?”  Our focus, at Alexandria Spine & Rehab Center with chiropractic care is improvement of quality of life, so let me re-ask the question, “How long do you want improved quality of life?”

No one is required to receive care any longer than they want to receive care, however they can always choose how long they want their body to function in optimal health.  For years, chiropractors have been known as “neck pain and back pain specialists”. Honestly, we earned that reputation because, frankly, our profession has had incredible results in improving quality of life, restoring function, decreasing pain, decreasing medications and reducing surgeries.  Our profession has had such success, we began to advertise that we will take care of your back and neck pains.  However, we may have failed to fully advertise all the benefits a person may have by receiving consistent chiropractic check-ups.

As a chiropractor, my entire focus is the function of the spine; of course the spine is there to protect the nervous system which comprises of the brain and spinal cord.  The brain and spinal cord control every organ and function of your body.  Naturally, it would be important to make sure that your nervous system is functioning as well as it possibly can.  The biggest benefit you can receive from a chiropractic care is to make sure your nervous system is functioning at its full potential to allow you to have peak performance and optimal health.  Doesn’t that sound great?  Who wouldn’t want that? It makes sense that if your nervous system is functioning well, then many of the systems in your body will feel better.  These include, but are not limited to, musculoskeletal pain of neck, back or any other joint, headaches, digestive system, reproductive system, respiratory system, cardiac system, and any other function of the body.

When the focus is no longer on a symptom but on the function of your nervous system, your quality of life will always improve.  Instead of asking the question “How long do I have to see a chiropractor?” let me ask you the question, “How long do you want your nervous system to function at full potential for you to have peak performance and optimal health?”
