Natchitoches…The Getaway That’s Not Far Away

One of the most famous roadways in America, the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, will be the site of a 175 mile-long “Sale on the Trail” on the weekend of May 7th – 8th. The El Camino Real, which means “King’s Highway” in Spanish, is the oldest road in Texas. Land owners and businesses located on Highway 6 in Louisiana and Highway 21 in Texas from Natchitoches to Crockett, Texas will hold yard sales, flea markets, festivals, trade shows, sidewalk sales and more along this famous trail providing a wonderful weekend of touring and shopping.

Those landowners and businesses east of the Grand Ecore Bridge to the Sabine River are encouraged to participate. Registration is recommended. There is no registration fee, but participants may purchase a keepsake “Sale on the Trail” yard sign for $7.00. Along with registration, each participant will receive free red and yellow balloons.

The Fleur de Lis Arts & Crafts Show will be held May 29th at the Natchitoches Events Center, 750 Second Street, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Over 50 vendors from four states will be represented. Admission is free. The show will offer an array of interesting arts and crafts: jewelry, wooden toys, mosaic crosses, handbags and totes, stained glass, canes and staffs, oil paintings and prints, and quilts. The Cookin’ on the Cane BBQ Festival will be held on June 4th and 5th on the historic downtown riverbank. The event, sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association, and sponsored by the Natchitoches Jaycees, is open to both professional and non-professional BBQ chefs. The National Fish Hatchery in Natchitoches will host an Open House on June 5th. The public is invited to tour the Fish Hatchery facilities located at 615 South Drive. Call (318) 352-5324 for more information.
