hereford-cathedral-webThe Saint James Episcopal Church Concert Series opens the 2016-2017 season with a performance by the Hereford Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys under the direction of Geraint Bowen, Director of Music and Organist. Hereford, Great Britain is situated near the border with Wales, and the Cathedral Choir traces its beginnings all the way back to the 13th century. This Cathedral Choir is a fine example of sacred music in the great Anglican choral tradition. In lieu of female voices, the Choir utilizes a combination of boy treble voices and adult male voices.

The concert will take place at St. James Episcopal Church, located at 1620 Murray Street and Bolton Avenue in Alexandria, on Tuesday, October 25th at 7:00pm. In anticipation of the Christian observance of All Saints Day on November 1st, the Choir will perform two 20th century extended masterworks, making use of the St. James pipe organ. These selections are Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem and Rejoice In The Lamb by the British composer, Benjamin Britten. The choir will also perform works by the Renaissance composers, John Taverner, Thomas Tallis and William Byrd. The Cathedral organ scholar will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in A Minor.
