January 23: George Heard & the New Heard, Vernon Parish Library, 7:00pm.  George Heard & the New Heard will be the third performer in the series on January 23, 2012 at 7 pm. George Heard aka Harmonica Red is a legendary live performer, international recording artist, and producer, who has performed with, toured with, and recorded with some of the true heavyweights of the blues, jazz, country, and rock worlds, including such diverse artists as Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Little Feat, Lee Oskar, WAR, Zachary Richard, Guitar Kelly, Clarence Edwards, Dr. John, Wes “Warm Daddy” Anderson, David Allan Coe, and of course his more than five years with Big Al and the Heavyweights.  This concert is part of Musical Odyssey VIII, a series of five free concerts for their 2011-2012 performance schedule. This class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and focuses on the benefits, techniques and concerns of breastfeeding. The father/support partner is welcome. January 7: One Day Breastfeeding Class, Rapides Regional Medical Center, Medical Terrace, Gallery Room, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by lactation educator and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. Research shows that learning about breastfeeding prenatally enhances your breastfeeding experience. January 7: Campfire Cooking Demonstration, Forts Randolph & Buhlow Historic Site, 11:00am – 1:00pm.  Campfire cooking is the main element of this program.  Food prepared will parallel camp cuisine common in Federal and Confederate encampments, but will also include seasonal vegetables and fruits that may have been available to foraging soldiers. In inclement weather the event can be moved indoors to the Visitor’s Center.  This program will offer opportunities to interpret period history, nature, culture, agriculture, commerce, etc.  Presentations will be planned to take advantage of seasonal changes.  Cost: $4.

 

January 9: The Morning Widowed Persons Support Group, Power Center, 10:00am-11:30am.  This is an on-going support group for men and women whose spouse has died. This month our focus: New Year’s Resolutions That Really Work. There will be group sharing time and this group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving.  The Morning Widowed Support Group meets on the second Monday of each month and is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  For more information, please call 866-581-3627.

 

January 9: Look Good…Feel Better, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Cascade Room, Noon.  Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength. But it doesn’t have to take away her self-confidence. Look Good…Feel Better is a free program led by a trained volunteer cosmetologist who teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients in active therapy. January 9: Sweet & Low Diabetes Support Group, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital Conference Room, 6:00pm.  This month our special guest speaker will be Susan Holden, Diabetes Advocate with the State of Louisiana. January 9: Bereaved Parents Support Group, Power Center, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. This is an on-going support group for parents, grandparents whose child has died.  Bereaved Parents Support Group has trained outreach volunteers who are available to the newly grieving parent or grandparent.  This month our focus is:  Starting The New Year When You Don’t Feel Like It.  This group is sponsored by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital and meets on the first Monday of every month unless it is a holiday.  Pre-registration is required. January 10: Sibling Class, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital 1st Floor Conference Room, 6:00pm – 8:00pm.  This class is a fun, interactive class designed specifically for young siblings who are expecting a new baby in the home.  Cost: $10 per family.  Call: 866-581-3627.

 

January 11:  Diabetes Group Class, Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Medical Terrace Auditorium, 9 a.m. – Noon. Rapides Regional Medical Center is offering this free program designed for adults with newly diagnosed diabetes and for people needing a refresher course in diabetes management. This is a basic diabetes program therefore no physician referral is required. The program content follows the American Diabetes Association guidelines and uses a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning. Topics include meal planning, monitoring blood sugar, medications, complications, and learning to deal with a chronic disease.  The course is taught by Sandy Couvillon, Registered Dietitian and Amie Starks, Registered Nurse. January 12: CLIMB, 4:00pm – 5:30pm.  This is a program for children who have a parent or primary caregiver going through cancer. Christus Cabrini Cancer Center offers a six-week series of 90-minute group sessions where children talk and complete activities by specially trained facilitators. January 14: Old Time Woodworking Demonstration, Forts Randolph & Buhlow Historic Site, 10:00am – 3:00pm.  Wooden handled tools featured prominently in the construction of Bailey’s Dam, as well as Forts Randolph and Buhlow.  A craftsman will demonstrate the use of some of the tools employed to fulfill that need.  Shaving horse, froe, drawknife, chisel and adz will be demonstrated.  The craftsman may also fabricate wooden cooking ladles and spoons with these tools. January 16: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Support Group, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Atrium, 6 p.m. This month’s topic will be on applied theater. January 17: Happiest Baby On The Block, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital 1st Floor Conference Room, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. The program was created by Dr. Harvey Karp and is designed to teach parents simple, effective and fun techniques to quickly soothe their babies’ cries and help them to sleep a little longer. January 19: Parkinson’s Support Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This group meets on the third Thursday of each month and is open to anyone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their family/caregiver.  We offer educational handouts and programs plus a chance to share with others. January 19: Better Breathers Club, Rapides Health and Lifestyles Center, 724 Scott Street, Noon.  Rapides Regional Medical Center offers the American Lung Association’s “Better Breathers Club” for patients with chronic lung disease. January 20-22: Scrappin’ for Babies, Kees Park Community Center, Pineville. Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital is hosting a three-day, scrapbooking event to benefit the March of Dimes. This special event will be filled with scrapbooking fun, food, door prizes and a few surprises. Vendors will be present to discuss the newest scrapbooking techniques. The scrapbooker who brings in the most donations will receive a prize. January 21: Prepared Childbirth Class (One Day), RRMC Medical Terrace Gallery Room, 9:00am – 2:00pm. This class, taught by a certified childbirth instructor, prepares couples for the actual delivery. Topics include stages of labor and delivery, when to go to the hospital, pain management, assisted delivery, Cesarean birth as well as a tour of Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital. January 21: Childbirth Class, Cabrini Women’s & Children’s Hospital 1st Floor Conference Room, 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.  This class is designed especially for expecting couples from early pregnancy through the delivery process. January 21: Fishin’ for Your Supper, Forts Randolph & Buhlow Historic Site, 10:00am – 3:00pm.  Civil War soldiers on both sides supplemented issued rations with meat, vegetables and fruits foraged from nearby farms and gardens.  It was also common for those camped near bodies of water to improve their diet with fish.  An instructor, dressed in period clothing, will demonstrate how a simple pole is assembled and used. If weather permits, participants can follow the instructor to the banks of Pierson lake to look for bait and test the rig.  Cost: $4.

 

January 23: The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This group is designed for Caregivers and/or family members of those diagnosed with Alzheimer/Dementia. We offer educational handouts, sharing time, and lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  The Alzheimer Support Group meets on the fourth Monday of each month.  Call: 866-581-3627.

 

January 23: The Alzheimer’s Activity Group, Power Center, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The activity group will be offered for those with Alzheimer’s disease.  The staff from Emeritus Senior Living will offer appropriate activities with a fun, hands-on approach.  This group meets on the fourth Monday of the month in conjunction with the Caregivers Support Group.  The caregiver must attend the Caregivers Group and stay on campus during this group time.  Lunch is provided by Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.  Call: 866-581-3627.

 

January 23: Breathing & Relaxation (Comfort Techniques for Labor), Rapides Regional Medical Center, Cascade Room, 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. Taught by a certified childbirth instructor, this class will be an in-depth opportunity to practice breathing and relaxation techniques and other comfort measures for labor and delivery.
