Alexandria Museum of ArtIt’s Summertime and the livin’ is easy – nice and easy at the Alexandria Museum of Art. Come on in and browse the galleries to escape the mid-summer heat. We’ve got a lot going on this July.

Summer Art Camp continues the Green theme this month when campers will create Found Object Art July 19th – 23rd with Davi Scarbrock; and Wood Designs with Karen Mcpherson July 26th – 30th. Morning classes from 9:00am – 12:00noon are for 6 – 9 year olds and afternoon classes from 1:00pm – 4:00pm are for 10 year olds and up. AMoA still has scholarships available for these sessions. Call us at (318) 443-3458 for more information.

Beginning July 16th, we are proud to present in our main floor galleries the exhibit In Forest Light by Brooks DeFee, Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at NSU in Natchitoches.  In Brooks’ own words: “The quality of light filtered through the canopy, the astounding variety of life on the forest floor is a never-ending source of inspiration to me.  Every time I raise the camera to my eye, I feel as though I am on the receiving end of a wonderfully rich lesson in design work.  Brooks captures the beauty of our familiar forests with an eye for abstraction in nature and a wonderful sense of layered textures in these rich black and white photographic images.”

In our spacious, newly renovated 3rd floor gallery is the annual exhibit by the Contemporary Artists Guild of Central Louisiana.  Artist members include local visual artists who work in a variety of media, formats and subject matter. The works range from the political to the pastoral and continue to please audiences each year at AMoA. The Guild has selected local arts patron and designer Dr. Larry Menache to select this year’s award winners.  Good luck to all!

The Clementine Hunter Café will feature the exhibit Rural Life, a collection of original Clementine Hunter paintings on the subjects of farming and domestic chores.  These works are on loan to us by generous members and friends of AMoA who share our love for the art of this celebrated local artist from Melrose Plantation on the Cane River. Give us a call if you want your Clementine to be included – we’ll be adding paintings all month!

The Opening Reception for these exhibits is Friday, July 16th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.  This event is free and open to the public.

Also making its debut, the Alexandria Museum of Art Gift Shop is back in business and in a big way!   Tommy and Karen Faulk, formerly owners of Delicious Art, have been commissioned by the museum to run the gift shop. Tommy and Karen enjoy displaying and selling the work of many talented fellow artists and craftsmen from this area.  The gift shop will be open for all art show receptions and during regular museum hours, Tuesday – Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm and Saturday 10:00am – 4:00pm.  Stay tuned to this exciting new venture – there’s more to come!

Yoga in the Gallery continues on Tuesdays from 5:30pm – 6:30pm, and Fridays from 8:30am – 9:30am. However, Joan is off to study at Kripalu so we will not meet Friday the 9th, Tuesday the 13th or Friday the 16th. Yoga will resume on Tuesday the 20th when Joan returns refreshed and ready to challenge us with her new insights. I hope everyone is having a great Summer! Namaste.
